I'm looking for pointers to upcoming courses and touring instructors in northern California, for either tactical pistol or rifle. For a rifle course, I'd like something that emphasizes practical/tactical shooting but is not overly AR/carbine focused, as that option is closed to me in this state.

I believe the HALO group in California is no more. They closed/sold their range in Concord and have not opened another to my knowledge.
Check the Tactical Firearms Training Team, tftt.com. They teach classes twice a year in the Sacramento area. Very good.
Check Advanced Weapons & Tactics at awt-co.com for classes in the Richmond and Napa areas.
Check Specialized Training and Tactics at sps-security.net. Tony has it together.
I've taken classes from all and can recommend them. YMMV depending on your attitude. These guys have no qualms about sending you home if you're unsafe or have a poor attitude. Doesn't matter how much you've paid. They teach those who want to be taught.
