Update: 2007 Summer National THR Get Together At The NRA Whittington Center (NM)

any ideas on how long this should last?

We were kicking around just a weekend thing. Folks arriving Friday and maybe a big get together that evening. Shooting on Saturday and Sunday and folks leaving Sunday night or Monday.

What do y'all think?

BTW, Art, I'm NRA, Sandy could be if needed. My son, Jimmy, will be there. He's a life member.
 
I think we should organize two stages, a weekend thing for those who can only be there that long but maybe another day or two of planned stuff for those that would like to stay longer, make it a bit more worth it for us guys that are quite far away to come out esspecialy if we would prefer to drive instead of fly so we don't have to put up with TSA crap, sure it might not happen but all that way for a shoot means most of us are gonna wanna bring alot of firepower and TSA might cause headaches. So some main stuff on the weekend and then some other plans to make it more substantial for those of us who would liek to stay longer or who are traveling a long distence to make it more worth it.

Also, if we can rent a range for a certian time or the day or whatever we could arange some specific shoots or compititions or something? Rimfire fifty or seventy five yards. Depending on how long their rangers are we could do a centerfire rifle match or matches at different yardage. A pistol match or matches of different types. Maybe a skeet/trap/something else shotgun event too. Make some planned events for those of us who feel the need to be competative or just like to have fun with a goal in mind.

And I'm not right now, but NRA is on my to do list with the next paycheck depending how much I have leftover after I do my bills.
 
I'm taking leave the Wed before thru the following week. So it doesn't matter to me but others might be on a time constraint. I plan on getting up there Thursday eve so if you guys need help setting up and I'll plan on getting in earlier. It's a 8 hour drive for me. Need anything from the Tucson area? Let me know and I'll grab it for ya on the way. ;)
 
if I come its gonna be a wee over 20 hour drive for me. Gonna be one long string of red bull and power naps! :D
 
I'll be pulling a camper from Vegas, and I'd like to arrive on Thursday (get the best RV spot!) and probably leave on Monday.

Oh! one thing just popped in my head--communications! We're probably going to need radios and stuff while we are there for emergencies and stuff like announcing events that are about to start. May I suggest simple FRS radios? We could limit 2 channels to just people running events, 2 channels for emergency situations and one channel for announcing events. That way anyone could have their FRS tuned to the events channel to keep up to date on things to do, or call on an emergency channel if they've had an accident that needs immediate attention. You don't need a license to operate an FRS radio, and they are pretty cheap.

Justin, Art and I have been conferring behind the scenes and we have tentatively decided on:

Unless there are reasons for real objections, we will stick with that date.

That puts it between Mothers Day and Memorial Day. The only real problems I see are those with kids in school, but hopefully with this much lead time, you can get them out for a couple days.
 
Well that sounds good to me!!!

I'll get my vacation on that week and I will see if I can get down there a little early to help out with anything, orrrr I can just stand in the way. :D


Later on we might want to see about how many kids are coming. :)
 
I assume the typical weather there during that time frame is generally agreeable?
 
I ran it by the girlfriend, and she's in as long as she can make clay pigeons explode. ;-)

Even if there isn't any shooting, I'll be there so I can finally meet you guys in person.

Neither of up are NRA members yet, but I've been thinking about it recently. When do we need a firm count on the 50%?

Sounds good to me though. I can hunt turkey here in Az the 1st week of May. Heck, maybe I'll just take the whole darn month off. :D
 
BedPimp, while there's no rush, I can't set up for the insurance until we have 1/2 of the group to be NRA members. No insurance, no shoot.

Personal opinion, but anybody in the world of shooting at whatever target oughta be in the NRA. Not only is it the next-best lobbying group to AARP, there's a world of information available on all manner of shooting subjects.

IS NRA "the perfect organization"? Noooo...But in my 72 years I've not seen a whole helluva lot of perfection--not even when I shave...

is there a general lay out of plans yet?

And while still not 100% if I'm going to be able to make it if I do I will definatly be NRA by then, was planning to do it this paycheck but another dang bill I wasn't expecting yet came in :banghead:
 
The minimum level membership for the NRA is $10, right? If we have to, tack on $10 to the registration fee and sign them up for the NRA.

I did a quick search at NRA.org but couldn't find a PDF application. Still, we could whip up a registration form with NRA appplication also.

Comments: I'd like to see a couple of extra days after the weekend for workshops, special instruction, shooting instruction (for us self-taught types), extra shooting events. If I'm going to travel that far I'd like a lenghty event. A CQB/disarming class.

Does the place have classrooms, a conference room? How about a weapons show and tell event: show off your stuff? A good opportunity to learn more about weapons. A lttle friendly trading maybe, even if the weapon does have to be taken home and then shipped through a FFL. Bring all the trade goods! How about a holster sho/and/swap? No-one ever gets the chance to try different models.

I'm in S NM and I'd be glad to share the ride and/or the spare camper berth with someone.

I don't think I have enough guns. Do you think this event would justify purchase of that Dan Wesson $800 SS Commander bobtail I have been lusting over, but don't really need? It sure is purdy.

I'm not a competitive shooter. I hope there will be some fun events for the non-experts.

any idea of events/matches?

Be cool if we ccould do some rimfire, rifle at a few hundred yards, pistol, etc matches. No prizes or anything just bragging rights. Maybe where it says senior or other such member it could be switched to say "2007 rimfire champion" or something like that for the winner of a match. Dunno if THR's software can do that but I have been to forums that look the same and they can so maybe it can be done.

I'm in Albuquerque, and I will have the preceding Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday off. Might even be able to stay through Tuesday or Wednesday the next week, if necessary. Wouldn't mind at all helping set up / tear down.

Sounds like a blast, I would love to get a couple NRA certs.

I would probably tent / camper shell camp, anybody know if they have showers / facilities for campers? Need reservations to camp?

Just checked my NRA card, I am good through the end of February '07, I'll get that renewed beforehand.

Never mind I just saw the link, no showers. Guess y'all will have to suffer through "eau de grislyatoms".
 
This sort of thing is my bag, baby!

Sign a brother up! I don't think my NRA membership has expired yet. And if it has, I'll renew. This really sounds like a great event. I'll finally get to meet the people I spend soooo much time with. :D
