Interesting article on hunting coyotes in urban settings. It talks about the need for suppressed weapons and how to get permission to hunt urban properties.

Luckily, the guy they chose to interview does not come off like the usual newspaper stereotypical image of a hunter, i.e., a redneck yahoo. He's a former Green Beret and current police chief of a small town, and supplements his income with sales of coyote pelts.

Fairly balanced article, OK, they do use the term "assault rifle" for his AR, but otherwise not too bad.

I found it worth reading.

The reason 'yotes are so prolific is because they are so adaptable. Like urbanized deer they have little or no predation and their biggest threat is from vehicles. Around here it is not unusual to see coyotes digging thru garbage put out the night before collection day in outlying areas of town, nor is unusual to hear of neighbor's cats disappearing at night from the backyard. 'Yotes are opportunistic little buggers and are quick to figure out human behavior and patterns. They've been in town a lot longer than most folks realize.

Most urban areas have ordinances specifically against hunting, and/or discharge of firearms not related to personal defense.

Every few years well hear about a Coyote being caught up this way, but not often and Ive never seen one out and about myself. the last I remember was about 15 years ago.

The biologist from the FnG a few years back told me the Wolves kill and eat them.

Umm yea you can keep the wolves. Much rather have to worry about coyotes than wolves.let alone big bears, or crazy cold weather.... its going to be -10 at night here on thursday .Thats way colder than I like. I love the outdoors and would love to visit the north country. But visit is all id like to do. More power to you sir!

The part of this sort of article about urban/suburban coyote problems that gets to me is the cavalier way that the writers speak of the "occasional" loss of a pet. Many a tear has been shed over the loss of a pet. Grief is not something to be treated lightly.
Yes, agreed. They talk as if the only pets taken were feral, which is definitely not always the case. I personally know of several small dogs taken by coyotes. One owner watched a coyote leap over a small hedge in his yard, grab a toy poodle, and leap back out, with the owner unsuccessfully chasing it.

City’s grow and the animals stay on their land, until someone kills them. Doesn’t take something as large as a coyote to kill pets either.

My Father took a number of photos of these guys before the HOA got rid of them because pets were being taken from backyards. He missed them because they were the only thing that controlled the rabbits.

I have walked down the same logging road as wolves did less that an hour before me. I don`t worry about the wolves . They tend to mind their own business when humans are around.

Seems to be the case with most critters potrayed as monsters. Usually they were nothing to do with people and turn tail. However if you've seen the movie "The Grey" with Liam neason ,although un realistic it still is in the back of your mind. At least that's how it is with me lol.
