Pit bulls attack, maul woman in bed

M. ALEXANDER OTTO; The News Tribune Published: August 21st, 2007 05:05 PM

A woman was attacked in her bed and severely mauled by two pit bulls this morning in the Wauna area of the Key Peninsula in Pierce County.
The dogs entered her house through a pet door.

The woman was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where she is still being treated.

"It's probably the worst mauling our guys have ever seen," said Pierce County Sheriff Department spokesman Ed Troyer.

The woman attempted to shoot the dogs, then broke away from the attack and locked herself in her car. She then called 911 at 8:53 a.m., Troyer said.

Firefighters were the first to respond, arriving in minutes. They locked the dogs in the house, treated the woman's injuries as much as possible and called an ambulance.

Pierce County Animal Control arrived on the scene at about 10 a.m., Troyer said.

Officers "had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site," Troyer said.

The dogs have been transported to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County, and will probably be destroyed, Troyer said.

It is unknown why the dogs entered the house, what set off the attack, or if the dogs were raised to be vicious.

"We haven't talked to the owner yet," Troyer said. "We will today."

The pit bulls killed a Jack Russell terrier that entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

The Jack Russell belonged to a neighbor.

"The thought is that the Jack Russell heard noise in the neighbor's house, came in and was attacked by the dogs," Troyer said.

The woman lives in the 10600 block of 132nd Street Court Northwest in the Wauna area, an unincorporated area of Pierce County on the Key Peninsula, on the west side of the Purdy Bridge.
