That's a very nice price. If these were at the used gun rack in my local shops at that price they would fly off the shelves.

I wish I was down in your area. Most of those police guns get shot a few times a year so beside wear from being moved and handling they should be pretty nice.

Psst.... they ship guns too ;)

Thanks for the heads up OP! I'll be getting at least one. For less than $200 you can't go wrong.

I'd have to get it exported as I am up in Canada. If I had a shop I'd do a dozen of them and get my money back plus a keeper for me even with the fees to cross the border.

$179 is great especially if you're a gunsmith/gunsmith student. You can fix it yourself, refinish it and sell it.

Please forgive me, but I'm hoping one of you can help educate me. I've been interested in picking up a shotgun so this is pretty timely for me. My problem is shotguns are some of the most confusing guns to me. So here's my questions...

- I see a few of you saying this is a good price. What do these normally run on the used market?

- This is a smidge cheaper than a new Maverick 88. Is there a reason to get this one used over a new 88? I just don't know what makes one shotgun better than another.

- Maybe the dumbest question of them all... I'm mainly looking for something to do skeet shooting and hopefully go duck hunting with a friend. Home defense would be an added benefit. Is there any reason this won't be good for those tasks?

I'm ready to get one of these when they come in. I just want to make sure it's a wise purchase. Thanks for your help.

this will have a short barrel, possibly rifle sights, and maybe a pistol grip. Good for an apartment complex, bad for sporting games and birds. A replacement barrel will run you $200 new, and $100 used. For that kind of money, get something else for skeet. The attached pictures is pulled right from summit's website under riot guns. Cool as all get out, and a horrible bird gun.

A few more things; they won't have chokes but will be cylinder bore. Also, the description is a bit skimpy. Will they all have wood stocks or composite for instance? They will have a big magazine which is great for home defense but illegal for many types of bird hunting unless you plug the magazine.

I have tested one though. It was one with the composite furniture and was pretty heavy. It patterned well enough for closer range bird hunting and did pretty well with the cheaper Remington rifled slugs.

At $179, I assume it will cost what, $25 or so to ship, plus another $25 for my FFL fee, so it comes to approx $230 when all is said and done. Still a darn good price.

.
Did Wingmasters or police Wingmasters ever have anything but wood furniture? I was under the impression that "Express", or "Police Magnum" and the like were the 870s wearing laminate or composite furniture...

An original police Wingmaster would have come with a wood stock. These guns are probably 30-40 years old so they might have been reconditioned with plastic stocks at some point. My main concern would be whether it has the Flexitab Conversion.

Since the old bare bones Wingmaster in riot configuration was my go to weapon in a career from 1973 to 1995... Here's what I'd be looking for (or hoping for...) in an old police service Wingmaster....

I'd want one that had never been modified and was still in its original plain format with an 18" barrel, bead sight, and plain wood furniture. I wouldn't mind various nicks, scratches and scuffs to either wood or steel. Although I'm partial to blued weapons a parkerized one would be just fine... Along with the above features I'd be looking for the basic four shot tube since that's the way they came back then. There were quite a few from that era that had rifle sights instead of the bead sight I prefer - but all should have a basic improved cylinder bore.... If you want a flexi-tab conversion that will be easy to obtain after the fact but those Wingmasters didn't come with them at all from the factory so you're hoping that such a mod was properly done by the agency's armorer....

In my world it would be pretty hard to beat one of those old Wingmasters - even ones that are barely in "rack grade" condition. The prices listed seem very good....

They may or may not be excellent HD guns if they have not had the Flex Tab conversion done. If not then add about $100 to $110 to that price if you can find the Flex Tab conversion at the LE Kit price. If not then plan on $151.85 plus shipping to get those three parts from Remington.

Also, these is no assurance that simply looking at the carrier will tell you if they are converted as LE armorers are notorious for removing parts from the guns they are trading in. I have received several sent to me by guys who bought them on line only to find they had non flex tab breech bolts and other parts changed out. One was a 2002 model but had a pre 1990 barrel so the stand off was of course longer and his tube extension was being pulled up at an angle. He was not happy about spending $35 on a Pre-'90s barrel bracket. So, also notorious is to go through them and keep the best barrels and put the worse ones on the guns that are being traded in. Department trade ins can be good deals if you can hold the gun and go through it. If you have to buy sight unseen make sure the seller has a good rep and will take it back if there are any major issues.

Main thing is to know the weapon and know what you are looking at. If you don't, then take someone with you who does or if buying on line have a knowledgeable person check it out as soon as you get it.

Has not work till the Flex tab conversion came out and all new 12ga 870 come with it. The older Wingmasters can not clear a jam by racking the action back. The Flex tab is three parts, a carrier with a tab cut in it, a Breech bolt that has the bottom cut out some and a different style slide. With the flex tab system when a shell gets caught between a closed bolt and the carrier you can rack the action back and the tab gives some when the rim of the shell presses against it and the cut in the breech bolt provide additional clearance, so the action comes back, ejects the shell that was in the chamber and you then rack it forward and chamber the shell that was jammed. This is critical in a defense gun whether defending against two or four legged threats.

With out the flex tab the way to clear the jam is disassemble the gun.

From what I've read most of the time you have the "shell jump" jam is on shotguns fully loaded in a butt down vertical mount like in police vehicles getting bounced and viberated. The Flex tab was made for these and now incorporated in productions. If your like most of us with the shotgun laying sideways most of the time I doubt it would be a issue. I don't know anyone who has had a 870 jam like this in normal use. Might be a problem a under the bed or standing in a corner will never happen. JMHO.

Don't know what kind of stuff you are reading that would make a claim like that. You might want to not read that stuff because who ever wrote that has no idea of what the issue is.

The issue can occur when you short stroke the action and also when loading. It can also be a result of dirt or gunk behind the shell latches. Anyone who has any real time on an 870 has had a shell jammed between the carrier and the closed breech bolt at some time or has been on the range when I occurred and someone ask them how to clear it. Not that I have more time then others here but being I have been using one for over 45 years and for 21 of that as a duty weapon I can sit at the table with the others here that have their time on this platform and they will all attest the issue has nothing to do with how the weapon is stored.
