New to this forum, this is my first post. I am looking for some feedback regarding a used/mint SKB 685 Trap vs. new Ruger Red Label. $900 for the used/mint SKB with 3 Briley chokes. $1390 for the Ruger both are .12 with 30". What are the pros and cons of each? What would you choose and why? Thank you in advance for you opinion.

They are both nice, but Ruger Red(and Gold) Labels are horribly overpriced IMHO. I'm fond of SKBs, but I'm not sure what one like that would go for. Does it have porting near the front of the BBLs?

neither are ported. I was told the SKB is a 1 owner gun approx 10 yrs old (supposedly < 100 rnds fired)

IMO, I would pick the SKB - I currently have 2 of them, and got rid of my RL in 28 after too many problems

You said the SKB was a trap gun - if that is NOT what you intend to shoot, you might need some minor stock adjustments, otherwise it should last you a looooong time

If you want a trap gun, get the SKB.

They balance well and shoot well. I have an SKB from the '70s. Still works great.

I really like the 685 SKB. It is very nice and has very nice wood without being too gaudy. It is also a fine gun mechanically.

If the comb of the stock is not too high for you, then I would vote for the SKB. Even if the comb is a little high, you could have it converted to an adjustable comb for about $175 and have a very versatile gun. If you should decide to sell the gun in the future, the adjustable comb would add value to the gun and make it easier to fit a variety of different shooters. You would still be money ahead versus buying the Ruger, IMO.

If the SKB has only had 100 or so rounds through it the action should still be on the stiff side to close and the entire gun should feel "tight".

But to your primary question - assuming the SKB is in good condition, it would be the hands-down top choice by a goodly margin.
