I have noticed many sellers on GunBroker both private and FFL holders are shipping handguns UPS second day instead of overnight.
Has UPS changed it's ploicy? I was of the understanding the ONLY way they would knowingly ship a handgun was overnight.

an FFL can ship via many options that are not available to the average person. Private parties can have FFL's ship for them too.

I recently sent a handgun back to FN via UPS second day, however, it was FN that issued the shipping label.

I remember a few years back a big stur when both UPS and FedEx put policies in place that they would ONLY ship handguns via next day regardless as to who was shipping. Even new guns comming from the manufacturer could only go overnight. At the time many dealers were upset and of course there was great hate and discontent in the community with threats of boycotting UPS.

UPS policy for "off the street" customers is that they must go overnight. (same as FedEx)

UPS policy for their "regular" customer is what ever the two of them negotiate. (Same as FedEx)

There is no "law" involved, just company policy. (same as FedEx)

USPS Policy (Post Office, which does have the force of law) is NO handgun shipments by Non-FFL's.

Any company that doesn't do this is pretty much by any definition is giving crappy customer service! It costs them maybe $10, it'll cost you $60+ for overnight :(

You all are reminding me to ask my FFL the next time I see him what his fee is to ship and how he does it (USPS,UPS,FedEx,etc.) Be good to know if sending it through him could be cheaper.

Sota,

It should be a little cheaper to have your FFL holder to ship it priority mail and you would be supporting a local merchant rather than a big company. Priority mail tracking is getting really good now too!

I sent a Glock receiver out to be serviced last year (fyi: UPS and FedEx consider a receiver to be a firearm) and was told by the receiving shop/FFL that I only needed to ship it "air". They recommended FedEx 2-day air, which is what I used. I informed my shipper of the contents and had no issues.

I am a regular customer of the LGS and they will ship for me via USPS at no fee IF I do the packing and provide them a copy of the addressee's FFL.

BTW, USPS will accept handgun shipments ONLY from 01 and 02 FFL's, not from 03 (C&R) FFL's. They will accept antique guns of any kind from anyone.

It is often better, if possible, to check with a post office in advance; many employees don't know the rules and go off the rails as soon as someone says "gun".

Does it matter if you use the website to print your own label on a 3 day-supersaver type of shipping (i.e. cheapest air shipping, but NOT ground) and drop it into a UPS or FedEx box? Would the web the app glean the word "gun" or "firearm" from the contents of the description? You told the shipper what was in it. It's up to them to tell you their policy. Has anyone tried this?

Sure it matters. Doing so violates the carriers tariff.
UPS

FedEx Express

and drop it into a UPS or FedEx box?
Definitely not allowed by either carrier.

Neither carrier asks for contents on the web shipping app.

You told the shipper what was in it. It's up to them to tell you their policy.
No, it isn't.
Both UPS and FedEx publish their tariffs. It is YOUR responsibility to abide by those policies. Failure to do so means any claim for loss, damage or theft will be void. Even if the clerk at FedEx Office or the local UPS Store tells you otherwise, the tariff is enforcable as published.

Has anyone tried this?
Only the ignorant.;)
