As a USPSA Revolver shooter I have always been interested in following what equipment is being used. Not shooting it as much this coming year as I transition to Limited but I still like to keep tabs on it. The USPSA published the equipment survey for the 2018 USPSA Nationals (Oct 26) a week or so ago. The Revolver National had been a stand alone match since 2013 but this year it got combined back in with the Limited and Limited-10 National match so attendance was much lower. Only 26 competitors this year compared to 80 the previous year.

Couple interesting rambling thoughts.

-Everyone shot Minor Revolver, no one shot Major. So that means very likely everyone was shooting an 8-shot revolver. Would be interesting if anyone shot a 6 or 7-shot revolver but I highly doubt it.

-Of the 26 shooters there was one Taurus, two Ruger revolvers and the remain S&W.

-The Taurus appearance surprised me and I would love to see that particular Taurus revolver only because I believe Taurus has always ported the barrel on their 8-shot 357 Magnum and ported barrels are not legal in the Revolver division. I would like to see how it had been modified.

-9mm ruled the match with 58% of the competitors shooting it and 38 Short Colt a distance second at 19%. I would be curios to know how many of the 9mm guns are S&W 929's and how many are converted 38/357 guns.

-80% of the competitor where using Hogue grips. It would be interesting to see what percentage are the mono-grips and what percentage are the Big-Butt grips.

-I shot on the 2018 winner, Michael Poggie's squad back in 2014 at the Nationals. Back when he was only a Master and took 8th place, I only finished 45th of 113 back then. He was a real nice guy, easy to talk to and fun to watch shoot.

-I was surprised to see Remington Brass so high on the list (it was third behind range brass so nothing to special). I personally prefer Remington 38 Short Colt to Starline. It seems to fit better on Revolver Supply moonclips I like to use but I did not think anyone else felt the same.

Thoughts?

I haven't been following the latest trends, but I'm surprised to see the dominance of 9mm. When I was following it - right after they allowed 8-shot minor to play - .38SC seemed de rigueur, and IIRC, the 9mm guns had some accuracy issues.

They do have a shooting team...
Definitely, but this is the first time a Taurus revolver has shot in the Revolver National match in at least the last decade and I would not be surprised if this was not the first time since the inception off the division.

I hadn't seen that survey. I like that they do these. Model #s would be nice.

I see Clays & TG comprise 54% of the powder types used, and most of the bullets where coated.

I don't know if a Taurus has made a showing at IRC or not. There have been more Rugers lately. I'm hoping to go this year in PA, couldn't make 2018.

Moon clips on the 9mm and a shorter oal leads to a more fumble free and hopefully faster reload. I believe.

38 Short Colt is basically the same length as 9x19. The big reason 9mm is taking over is the moonclips for a rimmless cartridge are thicker and thus more robust and much less finicky about what brass they are paired with. 38/357 of any length on the other hand is one of the most finicky cartridges to run on moonclips.
