I am glad you asked.

I was just there today. Stopped by to ask about the camping and the shooting and all that...
The guy there was very cool.

Camping outside of the prepped camping zone is FREE.
Shooting outside of the prepped camping zone is COOL.

The guy even laughed and told a story of last year when some campers freaked out because they saw some people shooting... (in a safe direction away from roads and all that) The Forest guy said "So?"

It was beautiful out there. There is a camping zone called "Renegade" and that area to the west or to the south of that looks like our ticket. Even has some 4X4 trails.

So... the shooting is good and the camping is free and no one can bother us...

I officially nominate Strawberry as our Gathering place.
Any seconds?

George, I'm in. What about getting there early to kind of stake some ground out? I'm sure weekends are busy up there.

And can I get my mustang at least into the area, or do I have to have a truck?

Related to my other thread on the NRA meeting. The NRA rep said:

CHECK THIS OUT GEORGE!!!!! The friends of the NRA have donated $100,000 to a group in the UINTAH BASIN to help build a range, and I don't mean another damn golf driving range either. It will be an officially sanctioned range. It's to include shotgun, pistol, 1,000 yard rifle, and buildings for meetings etc. I forget the name of the exact area, something hills? They should be breaking ground this year.

So there the NRA is finally doing something for us folks.

All those in favor of Strawberry, say "Aye"

*raises both hands, and raises both feet and jumps up and down and says, "AYE"*

As for the gun show on Sat. April 17th:

I'll be wearing a grey Friends of the NRA cap, a grey GOA tshirt with a minuteman on the front, and on the back jokes about spoons making rosie fat, pencils misspelling words, etc, in red lettering.

For a picture of me dig up the "a ruger collection" thread in the revolver forum, I'm the short guy in the green and black collared shirt in middle of the group, facing the camera.

Due to work I'll only be there the first half of Sat. I'll be in line well before it opens though.

Yeah they keep talking about building a range... if they do it will be very near where I am living. All the talk points to a specific location and I've not heard any others. I could walk to it if they build it.
The old range, "The Vernal Rod and Gun Club" is in trouble. They are building some huge structures RIGHT IN FRONT OF IT. Seriously... they got Birdshot raining down on the construction sight. It's silly.

Not that Vernal needs a range... it's all Range out here.

Strawberry sounds good. I like that area. I hope my wife has our 3rd kid on time, then I will have no issues. Need to start stocking up on ammo now. :) If I go I will probably run my Suburban. I am in Farmington. First spots are reserved for PCRCCW and my BIL, other than that there is room for a couple more to catch a lift.

12 Volt, perhaps a friend and I could come along with you guys?

I'm going to have to get the weekend off, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Wes

I'm bringing my family... wives, kids are welcome to come. It's a great area for a relaxing weekend of camping with friends... doing some shooting... fishing if you like...

I am jazzed for this. June 12th is too far away!!!

Can anyone come up and stay over Friday night and help stake out a good sized area?
I'm willing to, but I may need to be fairied up to where you're thinking if the mustang can't make it.

Would all who are going please check out my NRA meeting thread please? Let me know if I can get some help or input on that.

Can we get ahold of the ranger station up there and let them know whats up? I'm sure the local ranger station can help me out. I'll make the phone calls if someone can get me the exact area we're going to be. Just to make sure a different group won't run over the top of us or something.

Since we are not going to be in a pay area, we can't reserve any place... this south side of the lake there is less active, so we should have more freedom down that way.

I can't make it Friday, but if you scout around on Friday and find a spot - we need to some how make it known to the rest of the group coming. That will be hard. That's why I'm thinking of a meeting location in the Renegade area (In Army terms Renegade is our Objective Rally Point) and then once we are all there we can move to the target zone.
If anyone is lost, go back to the ORP and wait for contact.

I would be happy to sit at the spot and launch 37mm Parachute Flairs until you guys find the area! :)

Ok, fine. an ORP is fine and then we can move to our FDA.

There's lot's of land up by Strawberry but your going to have to scout around and find a good location with a backstop. You'll have to drive on some dirt roads at least a mile or two to find a suitable location.

I suggest scouting before hand and using a GPS to mark the spot. Weekends are busy up there. Lot's of 4wheelers.

However, the fishing in the lake is outstanding.

I spend lot's of time staying on my boat up there...great views.

Possibly...

My wife would be coming as well... and...

Well, I'll be honest. I hate mosquitos... THEY LOVE ME.

So, I avoid lakes at dusk and dawn.... so camping for me is a Spring, late fall, and winter thing :)

"I would be happy to sit at the spot and launch 37mm Parachute Flairs until you guys find the area!"

You Marines arn't one for stealth are you? :scrutiny:

:D

Looks like my brother and his family will come up. So I've got the no 4X4 thing covered.

Any idea on a possible head count? So far it's not looking as big as I'd hoped. I'd sure like to meet a bunch of you guys. This one IS my summer vacation, I'd like to make the most of it.

Apologies to all who went to the gunshow today -- I was going to go, but I've been having a severe fit of migraines.

Alas, I'll have to wait even longer to meet some of you. :(

Wes

P.S. How was the gunshow? Any good?

Q

Gunshow: More of the same old, same old. More overpriced guns than you can shake a stick at. Decent ammo prices. A LOT of vendors that don't belong at a gunshow. Quite a few "post ban" rifles in "pre-ban" dress.

12 Volt, perhaps a friend and I could come along with you guys?
Wes,
I am sure you guys could ride with me, but I would make a back up plan just in case my wife doesn't have our baby by then.
