I'm looking for a fairly decent sized fixed blade knife for around $100-$150 or so that I can keep in my truck for solving problems that may or may not arise that involve the need for a very sharp, very strong cutting or slicing tool. What do you guys think is available in my price range that will hold a good edge for a long time and stand up to light abuse?

Yeah i was thinking about a Ka-Bar, but i have smallish hands and that makes me lean more toward something like the SOG Seal Knife 2000.

Should run you around 30 bucks...

does that one come in a combo blade model? i'm also looking for something that has partial serrations

i want a chopper and a possible radiator hose cutter, i want some serrations

You might want to throw a utility knife and some replacement blades in the glove box since cutting hoses and mounts is a blade destroying task. That way you can replace the cheap utility "razor" blades as they get dull.

Another good option for a vehicle kit is a small folding saw. You'd be amazed how useful a little openel camp saw is for cutting up tires, hoses, etc. Gerber, Openel, or even the saw on a large SAK are great.

The Airforce Survival knife from Camillus is great and serves well as a general duty knife.

For a chopper I'd get a BKT Brute or one of John Shirley's favorites a HI Kukri.

Keep in mind that you can get all of this for less than the $150 you're willing to spend and have tools tuned to do the jobs you might encounter and without taking up much more room than a single big knife that won't do any of the jobs as well.

i agree with hso about having cheaper disposable tools instead of risking harm to the more expensive knife. i like keeping a pair of tin snips in my car. cost under $10 and will cut through light metal, rubber, etc with ease.

im not sure where you are from but keep in mind in many jurisdictions its illegal to have knives "concealed" in your vehicle unless they are as far from reach as possible and in a lock box. i got in trouble for transporting a unsharpened knife i was making that i had zipped up in a pouch and in a tool box in my back seat. it wasnt fun. large fees and i had to go to a "diversion" program to monitor me to make sure i was giving up my evil ways(which ironically enough i showed up to wearing a gun because i had just gotten a job as an armored car worker and went to the meetings on my lunch break)

I like a $40 Ka-Bar.

The USAF survival knife has a reputation for breaking off the tip.

you guys make a good point, i'll throw my box cutter with extra blades in the glove box and get a ka-bar and maybe a folding saw.

The Swedish Mora knives are great for just about any practical job, and they sell for around $10. I'd agree on the utility knife for really dirty work, but I keep a Mora in all my vehicles too. www.ragweedforge.com is the classic place to get them, and they have a wide selection. Mora's a knife making town in Sweden, BTW; the actual manufacturers are usually Frost's or KJ Erikson.
