A friend is interested in buying my S&W 629 4" so I'm curiuos as to what's a fair price. It has 629-1 stamped inside the crane. I bought it used in '93 or '94 and soon after sent it to a gunsmith to "rebuild" it since the timing was off. It felt kind of loose before I sent it off but it came back tight and with good timing. I haven't shot the 629 much over the years and have quite a few Ruger revolvers chambered for .45 Colt which I prefer to .44 Mag so don't really have a need for the S&W.

They seem to be priced between $650 & $700 used on the internet. If it's a good friend you can go lower.

A brand new 4" M629 has a list price of $949
Buds Gunshop has them new for $776.

Like I said, if it's a good friend I probably wouldn't charge him more than $600 flat with $550 being a good friend.

Thanks very much. I wouldn't call the condition mint but decent. He wants a revolver to carry while he's fishing up here in MT so I don't think he cares too much about the condition. I could include an extra pair of grips, some speedloaders and probably a bunch of ammo so maybe $800 all in would be fair. Hmmm ... I'm not sure if I have the original box and paperwork and don't recall buying it with those included. I paid $300 or thereabouts when I bought it in '92.

I'll give you $350... ;)

Too late! :D I owe him $825 for upcoming services and he's agreed to take the 629 as payment. I've agreed to add in an extra set of grips, two speedloaders (need to find those) and an undisclosed amount of ammunition which will probably be five boxes or so. I don't feel bad about this deal. He gets a good revolver that I don't shoot much if at all and perhaps he'll get a lot more use out of it. It might even save his life one day ... that would be cool.

So in exchange for services rendered, a revolver that would have otherwise languished in the back of your safe, now gets put to use for a friend of yours. Seems like an equitable deal for both parties.
