I'm heading to Colorado for a few days for vacation, in past trips I have carried as Colorado honors my resident permit for Utah.

I have done a little reading on handgunlaw.us but am still un-informed on many things like mag capacity and other restrictions, especially the new ones that just recently took place.

Can any of you tell me what restrictions/infringements I should make sure I'm following while in Colorado, specifically Denver.

I was just about to tell you to stay far away from Denver, but then I read the very last word in your post. Dang it.

As long as the +15 magazines you bring here are older than July 1st of this year, you won't be breaking that law. Otherwise, you should be able to carry in more placed here than in your home state.

What is the local law enforcement attitude like when it comes to firearms? I'm curious if I get pulled over and let the officer know I'm carrying, will I likely get harassed?

There was a thread recently from someone here in Colorado. He was stopped and he decided to go the extra mile and inform the officer even though this state is not a 'must inform' state. The officer told him as much; I think the THR member who posted it here said the officer's words were something like, "I don't need to see that".

So there you go.

Also, per the new legislation, if you happen to buy a gun here while visiting, you'll pay another $10 for the back ground check.

Probably not any hassle. Anyone can carry in their car in CO so police should be very used to it.

If he didn't buy them here he still wouldn't be breaking the law would he?

Nope, importation of mags is no problem as long as they are old mags and have been in your possession since July 1.

And herein lies the fundamental flaw with magazine capacity limits with grandfather dates, other than the fact they do not work criminally: no serial number on magazines so much harder to verify "I had it before the ban" defense. So unless someone carries the receipt of the purchase, it would be hard to prove grandfather status.

As long as the carry permits are still honored between Utah and Colorado, carry a sub-15 round handgun. Less hassle (legally) that way.

Yes burden of proof is on the state as inherent in the "innocent until proven guilty" and not the other way around. I was merely suggesting sub 15 round magazines to avoid the problem entirely.

Why would you say anything about that? Hand over license and registration and proof of insurance; sit quiet and just do nothing otherwise

In my Utah concealed carry class I was instructed that even though you don't have to inform the officer in Utah it is wise that you do. I know in Utah as soon as they pull me over they know I have a license to carry. But my experience with police has always been positive when informing them I am carrying.

I have never been told I'm being let off the hook because I'm carrying but I believe it has helped. In my experience Utah law enforcement looks at people who carry as responsible citizens.

Utah state police having access to who carries based on running the tag are the exception and not the norm. Very few states have a duty to notify stipulation in the carry law. MOST of the time in the non-inform states, police are appreciative of the information. Every time my wife has been stopped, she vocally informs them and has gotten thanked every time.

Regardless of the recent legislative setbacks, Colorado is one of the better states for CCW. Of course, the standard NO GO list applies (K-12 public schools, federal buildings, locations with permanent metal detectors (Mile High, Coors, Pepsi) etc.), but your typical "gun buster" sign, is merely a suggestion, and carries no legal weight by itself (just like "No Outside Food" or "No Bare Feet"). Only if you are asked to leave and do not, does it become a trespassing issue. Thanks to preemption, even the Denver mass transit system (RTD- Bus & Light Rail) permits CCW. Due to a split court decision, Denver was allowed to prohibit "Open Carry", so keep your piece concealed. The jury is still out on how the 15 rd or less mags thing is going to work, so leaving them at home MAY avoid issues.

So that means my 15 round G22 mags are ok? Just as long as they are NOT 16 rounds correct?

Thank you all for your help!
