I believe that if I am traveling with firearms and I can own them legally in my home state, and can possess them legally in my destination state, I have protection while traveling as long as I am transporting them in accordance with local laws. Being from Illinois originally I am aware of the FOID requirements at least as they were originally imposed so my question is: If I travel to Illinois to visit family am I in violation of Illinois law since I no longer have a valid FOID if I have a firearm(s) I legally own in Ohio in my possession while I am temporarily staying with family in Illinois?

You will be fine; cased and unloaded while traveling. You will likely have problems buying ammo regardless of the fact that you may do so legally (bring some if you're going shooting). Know that Cook, Co has an extensive 'assualt weapon' ban that prohibits many weapons by type and mags holding over 10 rounds. Chicago's deal I'm sure you are aware of. I wouldn't worry so much about either place except that I wouldn't plan on doing any target shooting at a range in Cook anymore (not many anyway).

If staying in Chi or Cook, I'd be judicious about what I brought and who knew about it. In theory, Chicago proper allows you to have a weapon in the city if you are traveling through to engage in a lawful shooting activity (even one banned under its laws). The exemption is on the books there--but I wouldn't put it to the test.

Otherwise no worries--have a nice visit with your family and safe trip.

Keep in mind that the police do not always know the law or are sometimes given misinformation. There is a fed law that protects you when traveling. The state police even mention it, the next line is Morton Grove will arrest first and you cvan fight it in court. They did change the law so that out of staters can buy ammo because of the hunting in IL. The farther from ****cago you are the better off you are.
