Going to try VV Powder for a change reloading 40 S&W with 165 and 180 grain jacketed bullets (Golden Sabers and XTP's). I know I am splitting hairs to a certain degree, but I found it is better to ask first. Pro and Con of either powder would greatly be appreciated. Looking for clean and meduim high velocity loads. Thanks in advance!

Those should both work well, but unless you just want to use a Vihtavuori powder, Universal Clays is super clean in .40 with jacketed bullets at around 85% of jacketed data and up. Accurate too. :)

I have some N340, but no 3N37, and have not tried the N340 in .40 Cal. Can't help there.

I use both powders, though not in the .40 S&W.

If you're looking for anything other than romp-em, stomp-em loads, I'd go with N340. It will give you satisfying load density (case filled almost to the base of the seated bullet) and virtually complete burn. It also meters just as well as 3N37.

Plus there's no denying that as a faster powder, N340 will require less powder per load than 3N37. And at the prices VV is charging for their powders, every little bit helps...

Clean will NOT be an issue with any VV powder.

Pull down their 2009 reloading chart from their web page HERE or consult the Lyman reloading manual for lots of VV loads.

Hope this helps!

I've used VV N320 with 155gr and really liked the results. very clean and good velocity compared with 231 & AA-7
