The early years of WWIII
Four years ago, core members of our local sportsmen's club dedicated themselves to the idea of becoming N.R.A. Instructors. Our purpose was a simple one. We saw the need to provide instruction on the safe use, cleaning, and storage of firearms. We also saw a need for teaching people how to defend themselves. Antis certainly weren't going to do it.

And so, we have a dozen or so instructors. They are variously credentialed in rifle, pistol, shotgun, personal protection, and home firearm safety. We have four Range Safety Officers, and one Certified N.R.A. Trainer. Added to this was our existing cadre of WA st. Certified Hunter Education Instructors, and what we were left with was a formidable array of experienced people who were ready to teach safe firearms use, and self-defense.

We had one small problem. Many of our students had no gear of their own. We (the instructors) have lots of gear, but we suffered from a lack of consistency between action types, safety locations, fit, etc., not to mention a need for quality hearing protection, eye protection, etc.

In the past three years, Friends Of N.R.A. Foundation has provided $6,000 dollars worth of grants that were the solution to our equipment problems.

We were able to stretch every last cent we were given, so that now we have an average of a class a month, a week-long N.R.A. Shooting Sports Camp for kids, and a fully outfitted Hunter Ed. class. We are now in the process (the target sights are being smithed to the guns as I type) of forming and mentoring a Junior Rifle Team.

As grateful recipients, we have decided that we want the opportunity to give back. I would like to invite all of you to help to continue this tradition of passing on our unique American heritage:

Duncan, send some of them over our way, we have a real shortage of instructors for even basic firearm around here (something I am ashamed to say in North Idaho). the NRA gave me a list of 10 names of cert instructors and all of them crapped out.

Nanaimo Barr,

Wish I could go myself! I loooove Idaho! Someday I hope to live there. Right now I live on an island in the middle of Puget Sound, so getting to Idaho for classes would be tough.

Why not get certified yourself? IIRC you were in the Canadian Armed Forces. You could be the first on your block, and maybe a couple of others would follow along.

In any case, I'll check around and see what I can find out about instructors and trainers in your general area. Are you in the vicinity of Moscow?

I lived on Vashon with Fred there for 10 years and wanted to say that the instructors at the Vashon Sportsmens Club are some of the finest people you could hope to meet and are completely and selflessly committed to maximizing the benefits that quality instruction can provide to the community. If you've got the time, take the trip and have fun! I only wish I could be there myself, those folks are truly missed.

Right smack in the heart of Puget Sound. Go to http://www.mapquest.com
enter Singer Rd. and Cemetery Rd. Vashon, WA 98070 click get map. When map comes up, click get directions. Enter your location, hit enter or click the button, and Map Quest will give you the directions you need.

Several people are coming from both Tacoma, and Seattle. There is a possibility that they have room for other people to ride with them to help offset the cost of Ferry fare. Car and driver + one passenger is about $19.50, but there is no toll going off island.

We have plenty of room for people that want to camp, or bring their RV. We understand that it is difficult for folks to get here, and we will do our best to smooth the rough spots out.

Update: Our banquet went off with very few hitches. We netted approximately $4,000 dollars for the N.R.A. Foundation, which is about double the average for a first-time event.

The food was absolutely fantastic. We hosted the event at our club, and as such we were able to tap the resources of a couple of our members that are gourmet chefs. They took antelope, deer, elk, jack rabbit, (all donated by members) and some store bought chicken, and made two savory stews that constituted the main course. Green beans, tossed salad, and fresh bread brought up the rear. :D Another member (the wife of one of the chefs - she is a pastry chef herself) made two delicious cakes.

Everyone said they had a wonderful time. About 7,000 dollars worth of goods and services were raffled/auctioned off.

I am constantly amazed at the spirit and generosity displayed by the RKBA community, and I am humbled by it.

We hope to have another FONRA event in March or April of 2004. I hope to see some of you there.

Thanks, Fred
