waiting period in MD

I've not followed all the recent new law changes but before it was 7 days.

But then, the MSP usually didn't return their "not disapproved" answer to the dealers for about twice that long and most dealers wouldn't transfer the gun until the reply came through, even though the law said they could. That usually made it about 14 days for most transfers.

MSP has a huge backlog due to the buying frenzy. 50+ days as of now. However, there is nothing in MD law that prohibits releasing the gun on the 8th day even if MSP hasn't notified the FFL to release it. As a matter of fact, a few MD FFL's are releasing guns after 8 days to customers they know. But it is up to the FFL whether they choose to do this.

Yeah, I'd imagine with the backlog growing to 50 days :)eek: and YAAAY for our side! :D) that fewer dealers would play the wait-and-see routine. When it was 14 days, it seemed no dealers would release the gun before the notification came through. Now?

Oh, what's that? The tight grip of control slipping away? :D

+50 days as of 2 weeks ago. New buyers are getting tired of purchasing "property" and not being able to take delievery and the FFLs are tired of having to store it. I know of at least one FFL that was bullied NOT to release guns prior to Ok from MSP.

Sounds almost like what our friends in NY and NJ are going through.

NY State residents are waiting six months to a year (or more) to get permission to buy a pistol.

NJ residents after clearing the hurdle of jumping through all the hoops of getting the permit to purchase ( 2 months to 6 months) for a pistol are now waiting up to an additional 11 days for the state NICS to process. (NJ residents are buying long guns in DE, PA and even NY State where there is no NICS wait)

Perhaps Maryland, New Jersey and New York firearms owners should band together and start their own pro-gun organization. They are facing a battle where the state does not seem to care about rights or laws. The firearms owners follow all the laws and all the procedures and hoops and the state does not have to. (In my opinion).

It's going to get worse here in MD. Starting Oct 1, purchasers will have to get a purchase permit as well, including background and fingerprinting. No one knows how MSP could possibly handle the workload given they are 60 days behind on just background checks. Right now you'd ave to get 2 background checks, one for a purchase permit and then another after you purchase. I'd be surprised if 6 months was not the norm. Currently the MSP firearms unit is very understaffed. If they don't get more staff, it's gonna be ugly.

The good newsa is the NRA is planning a lawsuit to stop the law, but it has to take effect before they can file suit.

Just a couple more examples for you...

When I bought one in mid April the guy told me 55 days and rising as I filled out the paperwork. I would believe the 60+ days is more accurate right now for a lot of people. My friend bought one well before me, completed the paperwork on February 28. Still has no gun as of May 3.

In the paperwork, you must check that you have not purchased a handgun in the last 30 days. I would like to get another gun before October 1. Does anyone know when that 30 day clock starts? Can I buy another gun 30 days after I paid for the last one or does that 30 days turn into 60+ days because of the paperwork delays? What a mess, I'm moving to Virginia.

If you apply to the MSP to be a Designated Collector, there is no 30 day wait between purchases. All you do is sign the form while having it notarized. No MSP fee. There is a place on the MSP form 77R for the seller to check if you are a MD DC. Then you can buy as many as you can afford.

form attached.
