Walther CCP

Weird - it seems to compete with their own PPS, which gets raves. Both are 8-round 9mm CCW pistols.

The Walther PPS is more of a deep concealment subcompact pistol while the CCP is about the same size as a Glock 19 though not quite as long in length. The PPS is also considerably thinner than the CCP. There is no 6 or 7 round magazine option for the CCP like there is for the PPS which is only 4.3 inches high with the 6 round magazine. IMO the PPS is also a much higher quality pistol than the CCP. I hope Walther gets the CCP pistol sorted out as many just love it. Supposedly the latest serial number ones are running much better consistently than earlier ones.

On external hammer pistols like the PPK/S does she thumb cock the hammer before racking the slide? This helps a lot as often cocking the hammer is large percentage of the total racking force, doing it in two "stages" can make it go from difficult to easy.

Check out the difference racking a SIG P938 with the hammer down vs. with the hammer cocked. When I looked at the CCP it was significantly harder to rack than the cocked P938 and significantly easier than the P238 with the hammer down. That and the size (larger than the PPS) made us lose interest.

It's been a while since we've gone shooting with her PPK/S. I hadn't thought of thumb cocking first. I have gotten her to more easily rack the slide by first engaging the thumb safety, which makes gripping the slide easier for her to do. She can brace her thumb on the engaged safety much easier this way.

I'm still reserving purchase of a CCP until we can actually handle one and see if she likes it AND I can gather more information about any issues with the pistol and corrective actions taken.

So keep 'em coming, guys! (And gals...)

:)

I have only handled one and it felt very cheap to me. My purely subjective opinion. It was small and easy to rack though.

In a Ransom Rest.

When shot by actually aiming, the accuracy is largely set by slide to frame fit since the sights are on the slide and the barrel is fixed to the frame, so accuracy is often worse than with a tilting barrel design of the same caliber, barrel length and sight radius.
The HK P7 uses the same fixed barrel system as the CCP, and the accuracy of the P7 is beyond dispute. If there is a tilting barrel design of the same caliber, barrel length, and sight radius that shoots better, I'd like to see it. As for the CCP, it is a bargain basement take on the P7, and we'll have to see how accurate and reliable it proves to be.

Citation, please. Plenty of guns have fixed barrels, and accuracy ranges from the P7's alleged indisputable champion, to the meager Hi Point blowback. I will admit my R51 was surprisingly accurate, but that probably had more to due with a badly undersized chamber swaging cartridges into exactly the same position in the bore with each shot (at elevated pressure :p)

The P7 was a very well made gun, and HK clearly puts a lot of effort into making quality, accurate barrels. This is fact. This also has nothing to do with operating system, and carries over to most of their offerings. Much like the 'unparalleled' accuracy of the PSG-1*, I am somewhat skeptical of similar claims about extremely obscure/rare weapons with relatively little exposure (especially when practically all the P7s in the States are well-used police trade ins I have a hard time believing are as consistent as they were when new). Especially when it's a brand whose following has...a bit of a reputation for exaggeration <ducks head>

Here's the Voight-Kampf test: Which is more accurate; the P7 or Mk23? :D

*Another well made gun, though not remarkably accurate among high-end accurate autoloaders

It doesn't follow that the CCP is as accurate as the P7 just because it uses a fixed barrel and gas-delayed blowback.

Do you have a study or some such proving this? Its an honest question because I've always assumed the lockup of a barrel wouldn't be as consistant as the slide/frame fit. Just seems counterintuitive to me given my level of eddycashun.

Yep, we've covered gripping the slide and moving the frame, including the technique on The Cornered Cat for weaker persons racking the slide.

Honestly, she'd get a lot better a lot faster if she simply spent more time practicing, but...

Been there, done that, gave up. My wife is stubborn scotch. Now she has a SP101 in 327 Fed Mag and is the envy of the household.

I've thought about trying the CCP, but there are just too many anecdotal reports of problems with it, for me to make it a carry gun. Then again, if my wife really wanted it, I would at least make sure it was problem free for 500 rounds.
