What does everyone think of this for a first pistol . I seen one with a 3.5" barrel and thought it looked good . I figured Wather is a known name . But I don't know anyone who has shoot one .

Ive loved mine since day one, never an issue. Some dont like em at all, say they have to many problems?? take a look at rimfirecentral.com for a wealth of information

Just be aware it is a Walther in name only.

I have owned one since they were introduced, and except for some initial design problems that needed repair, it has been O.K.

It's not a Walther in quality of materials, or quality period, but it was relatively cheap.

I second what rcmodel said.

I would also recommend a higher quality gun if this is one you'll keep for a long time to come.

I own one of the ones after they made their improvements. It's a fun little gun, but the quality level is very low. It's not terribly accurate or reliable, and if I had it to do over again I would have gotten a nice ruger 22/45 for less money and had a rock solid, accurate, reliable .22. The P22 doesn't compare at all.

What I am looking for is a 22lr carry pistol . I seen the Walther and thought it would be good , nice size , not too big or small . What would you guys suggest . I would like one that is double and single action . I like the idea of the first shot being double action and the rest being single .

Agree with all said before.

I own a P22. It's been 100% reliable, but accuracy is a bit lacking. It is no comparison to a Buckmark or similar.

If you're looking for a .22 that is "more like your carry gun" the P22 is a great choice - given it's design (exposed hammer, magazine release, etc).

Also, the Walther name is just that - the design feels quite cheap.

That said, if you're looking for a cheap, reliable plinker to shoot soda cans, go for it.

While they are not even in the same camp as far a quality goes as a real walther, mine has performed great. I have other "better" 22lr and they are truly better but none of them are as fun to shoot.

My wife and I both have Walther P22s and like them very much. We feed them CCI Minimags and Remington bulk pack golden bullets and shoot all day long.

As far as a carry pistol, it's accurate enough. Folks who advise the Rugers or Brownings (which are excellent pistols and more accurate for target shooting or varminting) are missing the point of the P22: it's a plinking gun and more than adequate for that purpose. I've owned Brownings, and while I like them, they aren't exactly designed to be a CCW.

IMHO, the Walther is a dandy gun and the price is pretty dandy, too.

By the way, Walther will soon be shipping the new PK380, which is a slightly larger P22 chambered for .380 ACP. Assuming the .380 shortage will eventually end, the PK380 might be worth considering as a carry piece. It's not a .45, but it speaks with a bit more authority than a .22 LR and is still priced well under $400.00.

I like mine, but it only fires CCI minimags with near 100% reliability. I tend to practice shoot with the slightly cheaper Remington Vipers. With the Vipers the initial round in the magazine often needs a little help loading into the chamber.

if you want to limit your choices in that way. i think a walther pp or a beretta m87 cheetah would be a better choice.

The problem with the Cheetah is price; it's more than $300.00 more than the Walther P22. As for getting a decent price on a PP in 22LR, good luck, unless the gun is in poor condition. Smith & Wesson does not offer either the PPK or the PPK/S in .22LR.

My P22 is very picky with ammo and will only shot CCI Stingers with any reliability. It is light and feels a little cheap in your hand, but for some reason I really like it. I also have a P99 and that is a high quality pistol, but it costs a lot more. For plinking the P22 is great with the right ammo. The accuracy is ok and the most important part....are you ready....my wife likes it.

My wife has one also, she really likes it. I think it feels good in the hand and is accurate enough as a plinker. We use Aguila ammo and it works fine. For the price i think its great.

Run a search here. Lots and lots of discussion about this critter has been posted for months and months and more months on THR. You'll get all sorts of ranges, with little middle ground: folks either love 'em or hate 'em. Most will note that they are picky about ammo (Mini-mags and Stingers seem to work best, or at least more consistently). My take: Beware of any gun that is made of pot metal, regardless of the manufacturer.

I bought one a little over a year ago and it was the single most unreliable gun I have ever owned, or even seen. I sold it last week for about a $200 loss and feel bad about selling someone such a piece of junk. I cannot think of a single malfunction that I didn't have with gun, but it did do good up to about 800-1000 rounds. Then steady down hill.

Oblivious I would not recommend buying one.

I had a P22 for a couple of years and the only thing I really liked about it was how it felt in my hand. Near perfect.

I bought it as a backpacking pistol, but it was not accurate enough to use for that. Would not consider it a good SD gun as it never fed with 100% reliability.

The worst thing about it was that it would eject brass, upward, in all directions. You had to button up your collar and wear a brimmed hat to avoid getting singed by hot empties.

I got rid of it and bought a Bearcat.

Yup, that too.

Best .22 auto i ever had ! ! 20000 rounds and counting . Loctite the barrell n rock n roll !

I own a P22, I'm a Walther fanatic and that's pretty much why I bought it, I don't shoot .22LR otherwise, except for plinking.
If you are looking for a 'carry' .22, I would first try to talk you out of it. Consider a Walther PPK instead, in .380. It's lighter than a 9mm, heavier than the P22, but has considerably more stopping power.
The P22 is really just a plinking pistol. It's very sensitive to ammunition (use CCI), and I'd be concerned about jams in a critical carry situation.
