Hi all!
I recently noticed the Walther P22.
Does anyone here have experience with this pistol?

any input is great!
Thanks!
Ip9

The P22 is a very fun gun to shoot, feels great in your hands, and looks cool. However, it is subject to a bunch of problems, and is very picky about ammo. I am still trying to get mine straightend out.

what kinds of problems? ammunition diet?
is it reliable with CCI stinger?

thanks, Ip9

anecdotal evidence says that stingers will crack the slide. otoh, the gun is best viewed as a consumable anyway. it's not built to last.

i feed my p22 100% remington golden bullets (and minimags when i've got them to burn, but i ain't payin that much to feed a p22). federal does not reliably cycle the action or feed properly. winchester is slightly less reliable than remington, but will lead the barrel (they really need to plate their bulk stuff).

the gun is very light; me, i need some weight if i'm going to even pretend to shoot well. the 3.4" barrel makes for surprisingly loud shooting for a p22. the 5" may be quieter, but it's said to be no more accurate, it costs more, and it's harder to take down.

p22s are sensitive to proper lubrication. do not under oil, do not over oil. if they are left too wet, oil will leak out all over the frame and slide, and the safety may walk loose.

the lack of a captive recoil spring is mystifying; the fact that the reassembly rod that came with mine was the wrong diameter is infuriating.

the mag release is in perhaps the worst location ever concieved; you *will* eject the magazine during the course of normal operation unless you are conscious of the issue.

the plus side of the p22 is that it has the best grip size i've ever seen for medium hands and below. women and kids tend to love them. that's why i own one. however, owning the p22 is the reason i bought a 22 revolver... i wanted something more satisfying to shoot.

Don't waste your money

It may be cute but...

What's that saying?

Cute is temporary; jammomatic inaccurate piece of crap is forever.
Okay. The saying doesn't really work, but I think it makes the point.

You may want to consider
Ruger MkII/MkII
Browning Buckmark
CZ75 Kadet (If you want a "combat" style 22 this is the way to go)
Sig Mosquito (No personal experience with this one, but it has to be better)
Sig Trailside (my budy has one, and it as a superb shooting pistol. I question its durability though.)

IMO the Kadet is the one most worth taking a look at. It is a fullsize pistol that is made entirely of steel (No zinc or plastic). The Rugers are great as well.

I bought one for the wife. I have used Blazer, Winchester, and Federal without feeding issues. It's fun to plink with. I mounted a BSA red dot on it. But it dosen't see much use, so I'm going to sell it.

Feed it a steady diet of Winchester Wildcats and mine keeps going pop-pop-pop.There are better made, more accurate and more reliable .22's;however,my P22 is fun to shoot,no more unreliable than any other rimfire I own and accurate enough for my needs.

Mine likes Walmart Bulk packs. I primarily use those hollowpoints from Federal.

Yeah, it's cute and it's been a good reliable gun for me. I don't think I've ever had a single jam and I'm really bad about cleaning my guns. I guess I've just been lucky with that one.

I never shoot it; I'm saving it along with my Marlin 60 for my first born.

When they first came out I tried one and it had absolutley the worst trigger I had eve pulled on a firearms. So I walked away. About 6 weeks ago I had the opportunity to try one and it actually felt quite nice, my daughter loved the grip so home it came. I've probably only got about 500 rounds though it in three sessions but so far so good.

I bought one about a year ago, I've got maybe 3-4k thru it to date. When I got it the gun was not very accurate so I called S&W. They sent me a prepaid mailer to send it in and I did. Got the gun back in about 10 days with a new barrel in it and the gun has been fine ever since. It's not a Bullseye gun but will shoot approx 2" 25 yd groups with the Rem Thunderbolt price ammo. I drop it in my pocket for my morning walks with the dog, it is a handy little plinker. Nick

The P22 is a plinker, plain and simple. It's a fun little gun for shooting cans but accuracy is not what it was built for.

Eventually I want to pick one up. I've narrowed down my choices to the P22 or SIG Mosquito -- well they were the only two choices to begin with.

Yup, the P22 and the Mosquito are the few 22s out there that don't look like a... 22! Any other 22 that looks more like a normal centerfire service caliber weapon, has to be a normal pistol with a 22 conversion kit...

I think the Firestorm (Bersa) .22 is a better alternative .22. It's a .22 in a .380 platform, has an aluminum frame and a steel slide. None of this plastic and pot metal business. The Firestorm is cheaper, reasonably accurate, and almost certainly more durable.

I love my Firestorm 22, but I did just order a P22 to suppress. Hopefully it won't be the piece of garbage some people claim it is. There do seem to be a lot of satisfied owners. We'll see!

The CZ kadet

is an adapter. However, you can purchase it as a pistol. It is definitely one of the neater 22s. I don't know why it isn't more popular. It really does blow the P22 out of the water.

I've only shot my P22 a couple of different times. Put 500 rounds of all different types of ammo through it. No problems with any of it. I did read reports of problems, but haven't had any yet. It's the easiest 22 to suppress due to the threaded barrel collar. (if your State allows suppressors)

Indeed. That is what sold me.

My P22 doesnt like Federal ammo, but it does like the Remington bulk box from Wally World. Fun gun the shoot. Accuracy is OK for a such a little gun and it feels great in my hands.

I've had mine a couple years with no problems. I like the magazine release where it is at. Though it will not shoot one hole groups it is accurate enough for plinking and short range hunting. I could kill a gray squirrel at 25 yards without too much trouble. I use mine for close qurter drills and fire it very rapidly. This usually will cause jams but have had no problems.

i've had mine for about 3 years, and i love it. it is soooo fun to shoot. the ergonomics are fabulous. mine likes federals and all high velocity ammo. it just doesn't like the slow stuff.

the only drawback is that my husband says it is no fun to clean. taking it apart is a real process - especially when i have the 5" barrel in.

I bought my 10 year old a P22 last month. He's run over 600 rounds of the cheapest Wal Mart bulk pack junk we could find and it's had no malfunctions other than initially the brass was falling straight back down so I had to take a little off of the ejector. Throws the brass away cleanly now.

It's a rock solid little gun.

me and my bro have put around 3-4K rounds through ours...it has also been used around a dozen times as a holster pattern and STILL just keeps going..

Had to send it back to the factory to get it realighned once, but now worries since

It's a fun little gun.

I am very happy the P22 exists for one reason: Handgun newbies LOVE it. I've had more new people shoot my P22 than any other gun, and hey just go till we run out of ammo.

I don't shoot it much anymore, but it's great for bringing others into the fold, so to speak.
