Wear your safety glasses at the range!

My local range is a public range in southwest PA (it's usually empty if it ain't deer season). I would say that only 10% of the people there have eye protection, and only 50% have ear protection -- it's bad.

I always make sure to take extra foam earplugs to hand out if someone else is there; I saw half a dozen kids being dragged to the range with their dad last year, and only one or two had hearing protection (and none had eye protection).

I'm lucky to still have my hearing and vision (I was once one of those kids who's dad dragged them to the range without ear/eye protection).

I'm on the obsessive side about PPE (eyes, ears, seatbelts, helmets, etc.).

Anytime I'm working with high RPM saws, shooting, or when I was in the military doing various things like Airborne Ops, I would wear my goggles. I've been struck in the face/eyes so many times by flying brass, shards of lead spall, hot powder bits, splintered wood bits, and other random items doing various work/jobs/hobbies.
The irony is that your insurance premiums and coverage limits are on par with those who do not use PPE, seatbelts, etc. I look forward to the day when risk takers pay their own way.

Never gonna happen, Obama took care of that!

Are there any ranges that actually allow shooters on the line without eyes & ears protection?

I've shot on both coasts & in between, also in Europe and I've never heard of a gun range (public or private) that didn't have mandatory safety rules.
Our state ranges dont have anyone enforcing the rules.
Supposed to be some officials keeping an eye on things but Ive yet to see anyone.
I wish their were someone out there enforcing the rules at the 2 ranges i frequent.

It seems to me that not wearing eye protection may be getting more rather than less common. I have seen a number of youtube videos of shooters without eye protection. The current ranges I shoot at have a written requirement but do not have on duty ROs. That may also be part of why I have been seeing it more lately.

A range I belong to was closed a few years ago because of safety issues. The NRA sent their team in to make recommendations and helped get it reopened. The first thing I noticed when it opened was that the sign, "hearing and eye protection required" was replaced by one that said, "hearing and eye protection recommended." I was told that this was one of the NRA's recommendations. I'm sure there's a lawyer in there somewhere.

Post 57....

Is that like the buffet restaurant signs in 2014 that now say; "all you care to eat"? ;)

PS; recommended sounds like a legal beagle involved. Required would need enforcement actions & that could lead to civil actions. :uhoh:
Quick story; a new small town PD chief in central Florida wanted to require crime prevention group members(neighborhood watch) be unarmed. He quickly back-pedaled into "suggesting" members not carry concealed guns while on patrols. :D
