Web could be terror training camp: Chertoff

This doesn't look good. Are we still a free country? "bombmaking site"=military site=gun site? How does it feel to maybe labeled a terrist by an Israeli immigrant? If the internet was a book, Chertoff would be burning it.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Disaffected people living in the United States may develop radical ideologies and potentially violent skills over the Internet and that could present the next major U.S. security threat, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on Monday.

"We now have a capability of someone to radicalize themselves over the Internet," Chertoff said on the sidelines of a meeting of International Association of the Chiefs of Police.

"They can train themselves over the Internet. They never have to necessarily go to the training camp or speak with anybody else and that diffusion of a combination of hatred and technical skills in things like bomb-making is a dangerous combination," Chertoff said. "Those are the kind of terrorists that we may not be able to detect with spies and satellites."

Chertoff pointed to the July 7, 2005 attacks on London's transit system, which killed 56 people, as an example a home-grown threat.

To help gather intelligence on possible home-grown attackers, Chertoff said Homeland Security would deploy 20 field agents this fiscal year into "intelligence fusion centers," where they would work with local police agencies.

By the end of the next fiscal year, he said the department aims to up that to 35 staffers.

Look at Gunfire's signature: ""Michael Chertoff, an Israeli with duel citizenship heads the largest secret police in the world." The misspelling "duel" for "dual" suggests something about the learning on which the statement and its implications are based.

What's being implied is that Chertoff has dual (not "duel") loyalties and even that he is an agent of a foreign country, and it's based partly on distortion, partly on sheer nastiness, and perhaps partly on anti-Semitism.

Michael Chertoff was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1953. He is a native-born American.

Chertoff's mother was an Israeli who married an American Rabbi. She might or might not have held Israeli citizenship when she gave birth to their son, Michael. If she was still an Israeli citizen then, a 1950 Israeli law automatically grants Israeli citizenship to any child born to any Israeli citizen anywhere in the world after July 14, 1952. The baby does not apply for it and obviously has no choice in the matter. Israel enacted the law after World War II to ensure that Jews displaced by the Holocaust would have a homeland. Other countries--including the U.S.--also grant automatic citizenship to a child born to one of its citizens elsewhere.

It is possible to renounce both Israeli citizenship and U.S. citizenship. There is no easily available evidence on the Internet about whether Chertoff did or didn't renounce Israeli citizenship--or even if he ever had it--but I can't imagine a legitimate reason for that to be of interest to anyone because of Chertoff's background and service to the U.S. Chertoff certainly has not served Israel or any other foreign country, because if he had done so he would have lost his U.S. citizenship by law. Chertoff is a U.S. citizen for sure.

Chertoff was a judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals, federal prosecutor, and Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Only the most naive or paranoid or prejudiced could believe that Cherthoff has a dark background or dual (not "duel") loyalties, or that he has escaped being investigated multiple times by the F.B.I. and other agencies, as well as by reporters who would jump at the chance to expose any scandal in his life.

Chertoff is Jewish: it says so in his biographical information on the Homeland Security web site. Whether that department is in fact the "largest secret police in the world" might be debated. I once knew an F.B.I. guy who was awfullly big, and I thought he was the largest, but there's probably someone larger somewhere.

I wouldn't draw any extreme conclusions from the news story based on its presentation here and I wouldn't become hysterical because of it. It seems to me that what is reported is use of the Internet by sophisticated terrrorists for training other terrorists, not you and me discussing firearms or arguing politics.

If you've noticed, most of the so-called terrorist prosecutions have involved attempted transactions (missiles, explosives, etc.) or alleged conspiracies in which at least one of the parties was an undercover federal agent.

It has been said, for example, that perhaps 1/2 of the members of white supremacist orgs are government plants. Often the most radical, they'd be the ones suggesting illegal acts; while covertly gathering evidence. Stopping just short of entrapment (or not).

I've often thought that some posters on this site are on the .gov payroll, playing the agent provocateur role... either "hey, what a swell job that ATF did at Waco", or "let's meet up and feed the hogs".

So, Chertoff is justifying the hiring of 20-35 more agents to crawl around the internet? Not surprising. A few more of them will probably stop off here.

The Reuters story doesn't mention Chertoff's heritage...adding it in this thread serves no purpose.

If you want to talk about a bombshell revelation, how about the fact that Ranald K. Noble is now the head of Interpol. Aspects of his prof. background (not ethnicity) are much more disturbing. Janet's hand-picked nominee.

I don't see enough information in the Reuters article quoted to make too much out of it. It does seem to provide an excuse for all sorts or peripheral spouting off here. I am not sure where the Israeli thing is coming from but I can't think of a nation with more experience in anti-terrorism and self defense. What I don't see is how this is on topic or particularly productive for THR.

Besides looking up porn and just goofing off, the Internet is used for research. That is what it was originally invented for. Evidence shows that that both the Colombine kids and Charles Carl Roberts (Amish school shootings) did research on the net for their evil plans. How are you going to prevent an internet recommendation that the Hi-point carbine is a very cheap yet good carbine, or that the XD pistol is reliable and comes with a holster and 2 mags? While I have seen these type of recommendations on Gun Forums, I have also seen them on NON-gun forums. When doing a google search on " the best 9mm handgun" You will be surprised that the topic comes up on car forums, computer game forums, or women's forums. They would need to shut down the internet.

Honestly I take most of the things I get off the net with a grain of salt. Yes Dorothy not everyone on THR and other gun forums are experts or even know what they are talking about. I rather the terrorist and other nutcases get half-*** info off of the net, then to actually crack open a book written by a pro.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg has served on the Supreme Court of the United States; so what? Douglas Feith was Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. So what?

What is evident is that these people serve an ideology that is distinctly foreign to the country I grew up in - whether it originates in Haifa or London, or somewhere else.

Chertoff is just one of a growing number of people in and around the WH that have more regard for the fate of a small socialist nation in the middle east than they do for our own. I could not give a rat's tail about what happens to the State of Israel.

What I do care about is our own nation - and it's foundational ideology. Chertoff and Co are clearly set on undoing it. So where do his loyalties really lie?

Any library has all the information you need to build a bomb. Any kid that can take apart a lawnmower has the technical expertice.
When I was in High School in the 70s, the ROTC had training materials on IED. We learned to build or recognise bombs.
The web is a free exchange of ideas and information, and if someone is promoting terrorist activities on the web, they can be watched and tracked.
I hope the "watchers" are watching the web. It is a free "heads up".
