Just started reloading 45 ACP. Made a few test rounds, and went out Sunday to try them out. All of them failed to fire through my new XD.

Each one had a primer strike, but none actually fired. The dimple looked a little shallow, but I didn't have anything to compare it to, so it might have been normal.

We then took the reloads and shot them in my buddy's Ruger, and they all shot fine.

I ran a mag of factory rounds through the XD and it FTF'd again. Only one factory round FTF in the mag, but still an obvious issue.

I assume it is an issue with the XD and not the reloads, since they shot fine through the ruger.

I'm going to tear her down tonight and go through it and clean and oil it again. It was clean when we shot it. It's brand new, only shot one time before, and it shot with no problems last time (all factory ammo).

Any advice on what to look for, what to "test" to make sure the striker is working properly, etc?

The first thing to check is that the primers are seated below flush. The ideal depth is .004" below flush.

If the primers aren't seated all the way, then the firing pin strike is cushioned by the movement of the primer in the pocket. That first strike will seat the primer the rest of the way and the second strike will cause it to fire.

Since you also had one with the factory ammunition, you might want to call Springfield, but leave out mentioning the part about your reloads not firing. I'd try it again with factory ammunition, though, and then call Springfield if it persists.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if you had your primers seated to the bottom of the cup? That is the only thing I can suggest checking on the loads themselves. If they are not bottomed and the anvil against the bottom of the cup, they sometimes won't fire.

I have an XD, but have had none of those type issues. I don't know what to suggest on the XD itself.

I have an XD45 as well and can't remember the last time I had any kind of malfunction, and never had a FTF but since you had factory rounds FTF as well I would say you have an issue with the weapon. I wonder if you have a weak firing pin spring, and this could be compounded by primer seating. Have you pulled the slide down before? I would definitely contact Springfield and check you primer seating depth.

I think you guys are on to something (again), the primers might not be seated all the way in. That will be the first thing to check.

My loadmaster sucks when it comes to priming, my real major complaint with it. And being the first batch with large primers, it just might be the primer seating depth.

Thanks again for the great feedback...

Try cleaning the FP hole and check the spring to make sure it is up to par. Make sure the FP is the right length. Try factory ammo again. If problem continues, call Springfield Armory, they have been very good to me.

In more than 30 yrs. of relaoding I have yet to experience one single FTF, or mis-fire. Your primers are likely not seated deep enough (.004" below the head), or your OAL is too long for that XD chamber. If the OAL is too long it can create the same effect as primers not seated deep enough, in that, the energy is primarily absorbed by the round moving forward when the FP impacts the primer.

Start by checking the primer depth. If that is not the issue, then do the plunk test with the barrel removed from the firearm.

I have a .40S&W XDM. I have an old Redding Turrett Press, and have had occasional FTF's on days when I was "low energy," and didn't push the primer quite hard enough to bottom it. Most likely problem is primer depth.

It's a compact OD green with stainless slide, sexy as hell! Lol.

The rounds pass the drop test, but we were having issues with primer seating, so that is prolly the issue. It will checkmitmoutnand report back...

FTF = Failure To Feed.

If it doesn't go bang then it is a misfire. If we are to use these handy acronyms then they must mean the same thing all the time or there is no point in using them.
