Well, it ain't the one pulling the trigger

I recently got a Mossberg 500 and have been running various slugs trying to find the one it likes best. Tonight, it was Buckhammers (1.25 Oz.), Brenneke KO (1 Oz.) and High Velocity (7/8 Oz.). I was using a 28" ported barrel with improved cylinder choke. The target was set at 40 yards.

They are pulling about 4-6 inches to the left. With one slug left of each, I put a fresh target up and took careful aim off of the bench. I ended up getting a perfect vertical string top down from lightest to heaviest. The Brenneke is centered up/down but I'm going to have to aim for the shoulder to get a lung shot.

In other words, the slug make/model meant nothing, it was only the weight that mattered.

Good work. However....

The very next 500 off the assembly line, identical in every way, could have very different results. Shotguns are quite individual when it comes to what they "like".

In 40 some years of shooting slugs, I've had two shotguns do best with the same slug, once. The second best slug for each is different.

have you sampled the federal truballs? you will love them. they are very consistent between different shotguns

Well, I just got back from the range. Using the 18.5" barrel, I'm dead center at 25 yards, but very high at 50. Using the 28" barrel, I'm okay at 25 yards but left at 50 yards.

You just have to keep trying different loads until you find one you like.
The Mossberg I used to have shot cheap Remington bulk pack slugs just about at POA at 50 yards. Other brands were less than impressive.

I went ahead and bought a rifled barrel. All of my past shots have been no more than 50 yards, but I tend to be anal when it comes to hunting. I'm more than capable of judging kentucky windage on small game. However, I want to know exactly where that slug is going because I do not want to chase a gut shot.

Has anyone tried the Brenneke Gold Magnum?

Brenekke Gold?

Nope, but there's no such thing as an ineffective 12 gauge slug.

They all work when inserted properly.
