I took it and its brother, a CMP "special" built on a 1943 Springfield action, out for their first sight-in the other day... I suck at open sights but that's a different thread.

Anyway, the first clip through the HRA, the hammer seemed to be following the bolt. At least I think that was what happened. the first shot was fine, the second chambered but there was no click, ejected and chambered, and on the next shot the rifle doubled.

I can't remember if I got through the rest of that clip without problems but I know that in the next clip I had to eject 2 more live rounds from the chamber because the trigger didn't do anything (because I believe the hammer had already followed the bolt). No more doubles.

I thought maybe it was because I was trying to be accurate and slow with the trigger, so I moved my finger down further on the trigger and concentrated on holding the trigger rearward all the way through the recoil and then slowly resetting it. That seemed to help a bit, but I did have to eject 1 or 2 more live rounds on the next clip IIRC.

I did detail strip this rifle upon receipt from the cMP to clean cosmo out of the guts... the trigger assy looked like all the pieces were in good shape but I'm not close to knowledgeable enough to determine wear... I didn't grease/oil the sear or the hammer notch or anything...

The stock is a replacement CMP/Boyd's so I wonder if that was possibly causing the problem; I've learned that an improper fit on the trigger pad will cause this in M14 types and I can only assume it would be the same with M1s...

Anyway, I didn't have ANY trouble with the CMP "special" (which also has a new stock) other than it hit about 3-4 inches lower than the HRA with the same 12 clicks up from bottomed out on the rear sight... I suppose that's just variables in the lockup or something.

I took a closer look at it that night and the trigger guard doesn't SEEM to be overly tight... you feel pressure on the trigger guard with about an inch or so left before seating but it's not a hard press to seat it. The round posts (dunno what they're called) on the trigger housing don't seem to be overly flattened/squared off.

Apparently you can't lock the trigger group into the receiver (out of the stock) with the same security that you can the M14 type so I couldn't visually check to see if the hammer was following the bolt... but I've dry fired it many times and it's never happened.

I contacted CMP customer service and they responded within a few hours (!!) and said that these problems are almost never caused by the stock and that it's probably the trigger group; he advised that I could either send them back the TG alone or the whole rifle. After asking around I've decided to just send back the rifle in case the TG checks out fine. I'm very impressed with their cust/serv so far; I heard many good reports here and elsewhere so I have no doubt they'll take care of me. I just don't like letting my baby out of my hands.:uhoh::D

Here's a pic for those (none) interested... it's the second one down. The "special" is the one above it.

Got it back yesterday, took it out for a sight-in today. Works beautifully. Action is smooth as butter.

I'm not going to win any matches but these were okay considering I have no training and need glasses, IMO... :D these were shot prone. Ignore the red circles... holes from schrapnel when I hit a rock inside the cardboard box the targets were taped to.

Seems to like WCC a bit better than HXP, unlike my other garands.

My fabulous shooting perch...

Also took my NPM rack grade carbine... got on the paper. This rifle shoots HIGH. Pretty good grouping IMO, though. Seemed to hit even higher at 100 yards than at 50.

Liked S&B ball better than Remington SP...
