Heard one advertised a town away... 100.oo gift cards for tennis shoes or food... so I was thinkin I had a top break beater peeling nickle- out of time revolver- a wall hanger if anything and an old beat up remington single shot .32 that was broke n rusty etc and an ithica 49r that did not have a bolt... lets see... they were wall art and non worthwhile projects aquired for basically nuthin so off I went. Got there and they inventoried them and processed them. No names for me just the model and SN if they had em and then tied the gun to the gift card... No big deal I had nothing to hide... "what card do ya want" the officer asks- Acme or Dick's- as in Dicks sporting good... as in Dick's sporting goods that has a gun section... well so much for the steak I was gonna turn them into... so in honor of the experience I did goto dicks and turned that 300.00 for the junk into a brand new Savage 17hmr walnut thumb holed stock/bull barrell and a 3*9 scope. The package was on sale. I may swap the scope out but it may do what I need it to do. I may put a 6x 18 burriss I have sittin around on it though, we'll see...I had been wantin to try a 17hmr and under the circumstances Wink

I have been giggling all evening about the irony of it all ... Big Grin

oh the sweet irony. Send a pic & letter to all the folks who sponsored the event thanking them for making it possible.

What are ya nuts? I need ta find more cheap unusable guns for the next one... I am sure the Card to a store with guns was a mistake...

That is ironic! I can't believe they would hand out gift cards to a sporting goods retailer that sells guns! I find that amusing.
You basically traded 3 non functioning guns for a nice new gun. I'd say you did alright considering that the guns you turned in were probably not even worth the $300 you got for them.

Some folks say that participating in a gun buyback, even with 'wall-art', just pads their statistics. Other folks say that turning their own resources against them is a laudable goal, whatever you use the money for. Frankly, I think that padding their statistics won't matter, when buybacks fail to stop crime. And the fact that you bought a gun with the money... that's just awesome. Way to go, Tallpaul.

i wish i could find out when some of these would get run in my area.... would love to let the state pay for an expansion of my collection

We really need one like that , lets see I know where I can buy old Ravens and Jennings for $40 , so I'd be making $60 profit on each gun , I wonder how many would they let me trade in ????

I'm picturing you bringing 30 or 40 of the old Ravens and Jennings strung onto a loop of rope.

I wouldnt support it at all. You could likely sell those beater guns for some amount of money, and you'd be helping the cause instead of hurting it.

But if you go next time, make sure you walk in saying "Thanks for the money, now I'm gonna buy some more guns now" or something to that effect.

Things like this are why I buy Jennings, etc., for anything under $25 when I see them. I use them in the meantime, mind you, but if/when they break, turn them in, make the cops feel good, get a huge profit.

A legitimate business action. Smart and profitable.

(translation: I want a similar opportunity!)

How many Raven's/ Jennings would it take for a new A R Oh wouldn't the pic's be great
I like the way you think Dust. The pawn shop owner thought Ravs/Jens had become incredibly popular but I had to buy a few more to get the Holosight for the AR!!! Gee, thanks buyback. You guys ROCK!.

Let's see, buy 16 Raven/Jennings/Bryco/RG junkers at an average of $25 each, that comes to $400.00.

Turn them in at $100 each, and then use the proceeds to buy an M1A for total cost of $400.00.

Works for me.

A couple of years ago went to one in Chicago with three "Wouldn't even make bad Wall Art" guns, A Chinese knock-off of Browning 1903 that a co-worker found buried in front lawn when they were putting in new water/sewer lines. I think it had been a .32 originally, but had rusted out to .38 or maybe even .40, a old remington pump .22 that keyholed everything at 15 yards. It's barrel was so shot/rusted out it was probably .25 if not more, and finally one of those POS $10 Chicom air-rifles with a barrel bent so bad you could shoot around corners. In addition the the do-gooders running the event theer was a Chicago PD officer (and Marine Reservist) there. We spent a couple of minutes comiserating over the still NIB CMP M1 carbine with the original 1950's paperwork from Rock Island Arsenal that some moron son turned in after his dad had passed away.

As one of the do-gooders handed me $300 in Mastercard gift cards, he said, something like "Don't use these to buy more guns." To which I replied, "Oh, I won't. I need reloading supplies !!!" I thought the cop was going to soil himself he was laughing so hard.

I need to find some crap guns, Chicago is due to have another "buyback" and I've got nothing to "sell".
