Went to WalMart a few minutes ago...

Sigh. I confess that I stopped by Wal-Mart today, but only to buy Hershey's Kisses and some other trinkets for stocking stuffers ... Was in and out in less than 15 minutes (took more time to find parking within a mile of the entrance than I took inside).

I did, of course, swing by the ammo counter, though. Actually picked up one (the last one) box of WWB 130-grain .38 SPL FMJs for (gasp!) $33.00. Bought it only because I noticed I was low on .38 range ammo -- less than 500 rounds left -- combined with my diminishing stock of HD +P JHPs and LSWCHPs...

Lots of .40 S&W 180-grain FMCs (WWB), .357 SIG (decent price if you have a .357 SIG) but that was about it for handgun ammo ... Oh, and some WWB .45 ACP 230-gr FMJ for $20/box... I'm thinking this was the same ammo that was about 16 bucks a box just a week or so ago ...

Strange but true story- My brother and I are discussing the run on ammo at the local Wally world and he said that he picked up the last three boxes of 9mm that they had on the shelf. Since we shoot together a lot I ask him when did he purchase a 9mm. His response was " I didn't".

Holy crap- $33.00 for .38??? yikes

I've been thinking about picking up a new compact pistol. Was leaning toward 9mm to keep costs down, but with an extended run on 9mm ammo I may need to rethink my caliber choice...

Same story in my area, everyone is sold out of the most common calibers like 22lr, 9mm, 223, etc.

A friend told me on sunday night that Dick's had a few boxes left of 22lr. I went first thing on Monday and they were already gone!

There was little commonly used ammo in our Walmart today. I went in to buy 2 boxes of 308, one 270, 3in 00 Buck and some 3 in slugs. I came out with coat hangers, allergy medicine and a get well soon card. No ammo.

They did have some 243, expensive common caliber ammo, target loads, turkey loads and most pistol ammo except 9 mm. 22LR was gone, only 22 shorts left. Didn't even see 22WMR.

Actually had some Federal 325 box 22lr, it was going so fast it was still on the floor behind the counter. The only other ammo was .40 .357 .380 and some birdshot. Very little, very little. Very few guns in the display case also. Got to love Christmas.

.223, 7.62x39, 9x19, and .308 make good Christmas presents maybe?
Everyone needs good stocking stuffers...

Or maybe not?.......

I bought a Beretta 6 weeks ago and Dicks, Wholesale Sports and Bi-mart in Oregon had lots of 9mm and 22lr. Three weeks ago, lots of 22, not much 9mm. Yesterday at bimart, I bought thier last marlin model 60, they had sold out all 22 ammo, hundreds of bricks. And just a few boxes of UMC 9mm left.

Are they going to outlaw .22LR ammo all of a sudden ? A good way to kill any gun control bill.

People are lemmings. And gun owners make no exception; just a different, better armed kind of lemming.

Probably not...but the very real threat of each round being taxed 5 cents or more makes the "lemmings" buy .22 now rather than wait for it to more than double in price with the stroke of a pen.

I'm sure someday they'll be looking to ban them, too.

Yeah it'll be nibbles,
Why do you need extended or detachable magazines?
Why do you need a semi auto shotgun?
Why do you need two barrels?
Who needs less than a 28 inch barrel?
Anything with a 3.5 inch chamber is too powerful for civilians!!

etc. etc. etc.

Stores here seem to have good stock of 7.62x39 but are running low/out of .223 and 9mm. What is left is pricey. Was chatting with the walmart guy yesterday while i was mulling over his Winchester .223 mil-spec at a buck a round and he said that he was pulling his own out the cases before they went on the shelves.

Now, I suppose the store manager could care less so long the store gets paid, but from a customer service stand point it seemed rather tacky to let your employees buy it up before your customers get a crack at it. In the end though i did not buy it as I thought it was too expensive and didn't really need it.

I have been noticing on many FS sections of other forums there is a lot of people looking for .22 LR and reporting it being out everywhere.

Odd, guess its the cheapest thing so people are snatching it up like crazy. It is the last thing I would have thought would be in high demand.

The new Remington in the 225 box is significantly better than the previous. There's an extensive thread on rimfirecentral about it, including an actual Remington rep weighing in on what's different.

NEVER had ANY issues with the old stuff in my Marlin 60SS.
It was dirty as heck, a few tubes of that and a good cleaning was called for.
But never any FTF or FTC squibs etc believe it or not.

Not bad in the accuracy department either.

So if they improved, I can't wait to get some. As it is I have less than 200 rounds of .22 lr, its all premium CCI mini-mags, and stingers.

I have been in a couple of places this week just killing time. What I noticed everywhere was the abundance of .40 cal, 3030, & 3006. If I were in the market for a new pistol or rifle I might go with those calibers.

.22 rf is the first thing I would think of for survival. And anyone who cannot lay down suppressing fire at 300-400 yards with an iron sighted Ruger 10-22, are not really worth their salt when it comes to accuracy and understanding their weapon/ammo.

the .22LR at 400yds does not do much damage anymore....every ballistic chart shows that it looses energy rather quickly...

I've scoped/sighted my 10/22 for 50yds and it's extremely accurate at that distance. I doubt in a survival situation you would shoot much farther than that for hunting small game or keeping someone away....

My theory on the run on .22 ammo is that some people are trying to conserve the other calibers until the shortages ease up.

The Wal-marts in this part of CT don't sell guns and only sell the most common ammo.. 30-30, .22, 12 and 20 ga etc. I don't ever think to buy ammo at wal-mart...

Thinking about it I haven't ever bought ammo in CT. I always get it out of state because the selection in my area is lousy and the boxes always look like they have been handing around for a decade.

How willing are you to personally put that theory to the test with your body.

I was just on Natchez checking out their .223 ammo situation. Normally they have 6-9 pages of .223 ammo. They've only got one item in stock now.. something for like $25/20 or something.

Another reason people have bought up all the .22 ammo is becasue they will actually be willing to target shoot/plink with it. Kinda hard to rationalize shooting $200-300(or more) worth of 5.56 during a single range visit. Almost as difficult plinking with 9mm when there isn't any to be found out there and the ability to replace it is an unknown. Can't blame people for sitting on what they have stashed away.
