What 1911 would you buy with $1200?

A few ideas:

1) A new colt Combat Elite. Probably can order and get one under $1k.
2) A used custom Caspian built by a talented gunsmith; it will outperform a Wilson or Baer at twice or more the price if you shop hard.
3) Really clean pre-1924 1911, commercial or military.

the last three 1911 style guns I have bought have all been Colt, from 1980, 1974, and 1999. They have the quality and value, others have the marketing and hype. Always go with value, not hype.

A good, clean, un-mucked with original Series 70 will set you back about 800 right now. It is as close to the original design as you can affordably get, and it shoots like the dickens and looks good doing it. And it will out-appreciate anything else on the market. I want to put two or three more in my stash in the next year, so don't let anyone else know this and drive up the prices.

a nice colt of put another couple hundred in it and buy a les baer.

For collector value the best original GI gun I could find.--Although 1200 is getting to be pretty cheap for a really nice example.

For a shooter I'd look for a good used Colt Gold Cup or track down an STI or Kimber.

I'd order an STI Trojan from Dawson's or Bazos. I'd also have them do their "reliability package" (or whatever each company calls it) to the pistol.

I bought a Kimber Pro Raptor II last month and couldn't be happier! I paid $1224 delivered.
