Ive been going back and forth with going 556 only or 762x39 only or 308 only or some combo of the three.

Decided to rule out 762x39 and go 556 and 308 (762x51).

To compliment a semi auto mag fed 556 rifle what 308 rifle do you recommend?

For what purpose? All. Yes. I know it wont do them all well.

Price range? Without optics around $1000 or less. Not interested in AR10 types.

Big decision will first be bolt vs semi? Have you went with one and wished you had the other?

I dont want to have 50 guns so no im not just going to collect them all.

Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle seems good to me. Mag fed, short and relatively light. Im not going to be shooting 1000 yards so i dont feel the need for a 24" barrel or anything like that.

Not knowing what you want the rifle for, it's hard to make a specific recommendation. Personally, I would be looking for a highly accurate bolt action. The ballistic advantage of the .308 is energy delivered at a longer range than the .223 is capable of. And you want it delivered with precision. Least expensive way to do this is with a good scoped bolt action, and the Remington 700 is probably the most popular base for such a build. Mine is an accurized 700 VSSF.

Others who know more will probably weigh in, too, but knowing what I know now, I'd probably opt for a .260 over the .308 if I just wanted to ring steel out to 1000 yards.

I went with a Savage Axis in SS/synth but opted for .30-06 because it's a bit more versatile. I chose it due to accuracy, reliability and price. I don't like the plastic magazine bases but if I'm careful I probably won't break many of them.

Interesting that you say purpose "all" and you eliminate probably the best all purpose choice (M&P 10). That leaves you with a significant compromise in rate of fire vs accuracy. I find the K98 Mauser to load very fast with clips. I wonder if any modern "scout" rifle is set up for use with clips?

There are factory and converted milsurp Mausers in 7.62..

Go with a Savage and a good optic. $1k is borderline on any semi platform.

You ruled it out, otherwise I would have said an AR10T carbine.

That's kind of how I felt regarding the semis. I would need to be more in the $1500 range for one of them. The "benefit" of the bolt gun usually being accuracy, is not a huge benefit to me. (reliability is a positive) The main benefit of the bolt to me is merely price. Perhaps I should but up my budget to around 1500 dollars to grab the possibility of some good semi autos.

Semi... Browning BAR
Bolt... There's so many to choose from. It will ultimately come down to what feels right to you. My choice would be the Ruger Mannlicher. But it's definitely not a long range tack driver. Just a good solid 308 that (IMO) is very attractive.

M1A ... it would be the LAST of my semi-auto battle rifles that I would sell!

It's EVERYTHING I wanted in a rifle ... and so much more!!!

Springfield Armory M1A, a fine, fine semi auto weapon. Were I reduced to a single centerfire rifle, it would be my choice. 150 grain FMJs and 150 grain SGK are killers. A bit heavy in the field, but well worth it. Over your stated price, yes, but great performance without additional optics. Should the S ever truly HTF, this is the one I (and many others) will grab first.

CZ-550 Varnint, Kevlar, Mauser bolt action. Deadly accurate out of the box with 168 grain BTHP's. A bit heavy at 9+ pounds for a hunter, if you plan to cover long distances in the field, but a very good choice for "one" really good centerfire rifle in your price range, especially if you need to hunker down here, and drill a hole several hundred yards away, over there.

FNAR 308, Heavy Barrel is on my short list of "next rifle" to acquire. Sighted in a new one for a friend. An impressive weapon. His was scoped with a Vortex Viper. I was surprised with the accuracy and the ergonomics. I found myself wanting one way more than I might have expected.

i found a old remington 722 in .308 that was all dusty and dirty from non use, when i got it home i cleaned it up on the out side and inside, i found out it was glass bedded and a ex job to. i adjusted the 7 lbs trigger down to 3 lbs and mounted a 2x7 leupold scope on it. with 43grs varget and the 175 smk it keeps three bench rest shots in under a inch, no bad for a 350.00 rifle and i think if i mount a better long range scope on it it may shoot smaller groups. eastbank.

Ive worked with all three of these, each has it's own merit.
Sustained accurate fire M1A Scout.
Pin point accurate Savage 110
When you just have to get the local gang bangers off of your lawn, nothing works like a .308 Garand...well, at least Clint thinks so.

here are my near to far familey protection rifles, model 70 in 300 win mag, springfield M1A in 7.62x51, colt ar-15 in 5.56, colt ar-15 in 5.56. these four rifles will take care of any threat out to 7-8 hundred yards, and pictures of the rem 722 in .308 that would do the same job 75 percent of the time. eastbank.

So is a .308 AR still out even though you raised your price ceiling to $1500? If not, I'd opt for an m&p 10 with an SWFA 10x42, you should wind up below $1500. My m&p 10 is the model that comes with magpul furniture and troy battle sights, and it was still $1250 shipped and transferred, I see the basic model around occasionally in the $1100 range.

All the major players offer both an AR-15 and AR-10 ... I've had experience with the Armalite, Stoner and DPMS ... my Armalite AR-10 was an early model I bought new but there was nothing that pleased me about it, the finish had light spots and it rattled like a shot out M-16 but the killer was the accuracy especially sucked and try as I might I couldn't find a load it liked and 3-4" groups weren't going to cut it for me.

Here's my LR-308 stainless fluted and the sweet 16 from DPMS

If you can fit it into your budget, go for the Stoners

Mossberg maybe?

If you are interested in the Ruger Gunsite you might consider Mossberg's MVP. I saw where they are chambering it in 308 now. The reviews have been pretty good on their 223. I just aquired a 20" Predator in 223 but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. It has it's work cut out for it if it is going to out shoot my Vanguard though.

I have a nice accurate bolt gun in 308 to go along with my AR.From the time I knew anything about guns, there were 3 that I wanted-an AR,a "sniper" rifle in 308,and a 1911.It took a long time for me to make the purchases, but they are the guns that get shot the most.
