you said you chrono'd them- what speeds did you see?

It was about a year ago and IIRC they averaged somewhere around 900-925 fps out of the the snub. I still use the DT ammo in my speedloader since it is jacketed and thus is not as messy as the very soft remi LHP's when carried in my pocket.

Have you by chance chronoed any monarch ammo particularly the 158 gr sjhp. I know it is the cheap stuff but thought you may have some info.

No sorry I havent tried any monarrch. I did try out magtech standard pressue 158gr SJHP out of my snub and 5" K frame. Only ~695fps from the snub and ~740fps from the K frame!

If you want inexpensive but NOT cheap, bulk ammo that can double as defensive ammo, check out http://mastercast.net/amo.htm I have bought ~10,000 rounds from them over the past few years. All of their published velocity numbers are actually on the low side and they sell a 148gr TCJ/DEWC .38 that does a legitimate 825fps from a snub for only $9.33 w/ the exchange of your brass. That load is hotter than most WC's but would make some nasty full .357 diameter holes w/ very little recoil.

Thanks wny thats lower that i was expecting but would still proably do the job in the situations i am concerned about 7' or less. By the way my baffel box build i mentioned earlier in this thread is comming together i will post results and pic possibly when done but it will be a week or so before that happens. I found and old microscope case that i think i can use as a frame and all i have to do is insert the 1' boards secured with wood screws or block them in like a traditional baffel box.

I was under the impression the S&W Chiefs SPecial in revolvers
was the blued model 36, and the model 60 when it became the
first production handgun in STainless steel. Since the late '90s
the 60 has been chambered for .357 Mag.

I have a Model 60 3" Bbl. in.357 Mag. but my carry ammo
is Double Tap .38 Special +P 125 gr. Speer Gold Dot
which I think runs a little over 60 cents a round. 1135 FPS
- maybe a little less out of my 3" tube.

The critical defense from hornady will be my choice for high dollar ammo, don't know what grain bullet yet. I have always had respect for Hornady.

BlindJustice- Mine was made in the mid ninties the imprint inside the frame is 60-7. This may not be the official cheifs special but the same thing for my way of looking at it. i am not very knowlegable in S&W numbering system for revolvers. I would lke to know if this number helps. I do know the 29 is ttheir 44 mag but that about it.
