Not just shoot, but actually carry for personal defense...

I'm trying without luck to get my gf to start shooting semiautos in order to expand her options for ccw. She currently ccws a revolver which is fine and better than the majority of the general public.

Any ladies have opinions? Should I continue to gently push the semiauto or just let her keep enjoying her revolvers?

Gratuitous pix of ladies with their ccw choices and mode of carry are welcome here.

If she is happy with her revolver and what she already has, why are you pressuring her into getting what you think she should have? Why not spend the extra funds you were going to spend on a new gun for her on ammo and training with what she already has and likes?

It's not about what you want and your personal preferences. Listen to what your wife wants and perfers, and then be supportive of her choice.

Would you tell her what shoes to buy?
I bought her a new vacuum cleaner once and she almost hit me with it. Then she bought her own and was happy.
My wife hasn't decided what to use in a ccw firearm. She will figure that out sometime in the future. I have .38 special, .367 mag and 9mm to play with both commercial and handloads. At home, she likes a full choke,12 gauge pump using a Limb Saver pad and loaded with high brass 2 3/4" lead #2.

Mrs. Hartkopf carries exactly what she’s comfortable with, a Ruger SP101, and nothing else interests her. We went around the world in her early days of shooting and nothing changed her mind. There is something to be said about a person who is real good with what he or she has, even if it’s not high capacity or “tactical.”

Some of you clearly misread or read between the lines things that weren't there in my original post. I am not trying to get her to change guns.

She does not want to shoot semiautos. I'm just hoping that she will take a mild interest so that she has more options; she has no experience with them at all.

So again my question to the ladies (if any on this board choose to chime in), what and how do you carry? Do you have any advice as to how to get a female comfortable with a semiauto? My girlfriend had a bad experience in a previous relationship where she was not taught anything and she crossed her thumbs and got slide bite really bad. Since then she has sworn off semiautos. I'm trying to get her to overcome that fear just so she has more options and God forbid she ever had to pick up one of my CCW's to defend herself.

Anecdotal experience from a random lady on the internet (of which we might have a half dozen that I'm aware of here on THR) will not help much if any, especially if there is trauma from a previous event. If anything your GF needs a competent and patient instructor who's name doesn't match yours. But that assumes that she WANTS to learn how to shoot different guns. Based on what you have told us, she does not. What you are trying to do is force the proverbial square peg into the round hole - you seem to want her to shoot something she's not interested in.

Putting it another way, would you listen if I told you to shoot a different gun, especially one you weren't comfortable with? I can guess you and just about everyone else on the planet would tell me to shove it.

A semi with a good beavertail will help ease her mind of getting bit. My high school GF got bit by my little NAA Guardian and threw it on the ground. I was very angry... But not as angry as her!

One of the ladies on the ford bronco forum carries one of the SCCY 9mm autos, in purple. Ive never seen a woman here on THR, but sometimes they choose not to reveal their gender because they dont want to get treated like a girl gets stereotypically treated in man-centric activities.

A shield EZ may also appeal due to the easy racking. Some ladies dont have the strength to comfortable pull some slides back.

I like the idea of Ladies Night at the range. Have her and a friend go. They will get exposed to other ladies of the sport and other guns. If anything it will plant a seed of curiosity in her brain.

I agree... The OP should set her up with some ladies night training classes, and leave the topic and his lady alone past that. Be grateful that you found a GF who carries period. A lot of men who are into firearms have women who refuse to EDC firearms.

@JERRY Let it be her decision without any influence or pressure form you. If you are worried about there being a one in a trillion chance of her having to use your handgun in a self defense shooting, explain your worries to her, and then have her pratice manipulating your semiauto and using snap caps to get use to the trigger while at home. Then she will at least know the basics should her back ever be against the wall.

My wife liked a ruger sr22 and used that for her first ccw test. She liked it well enough but ended up trading it towards a p238 as she got more experience.

She enjoys revolvers, but wants more capacity on tap with quicker reloading and easily carried extra ammo. She has a variety of carry methods from the bands to a ccw purse and it just varies.

Everyone has to figure out what they're good with and how best carry fits into their lifestyles. I wish I could pack a p226 or even g19 daily. It isn't possible with my work and other factors.

If you carry every day and practice regularly, you're ahead of the curve and ready for 99.9% of anything (notice I didn't mention platform or caliber here).

Until we're inundated with stories of pocket or purse carriers killed because their little 22, 32, 380, 5 shot snub or other commonly derided ccw choice was not enough for the waves upon waves of shotgunning miscreants they faced, then that's my story, and I'm sticking to it (oh if only they had at least a 9mm with 10+ rounds. Then they would have prevailed...)

That's not what the op was advocating. His gf is familiar with the revolver's simpler "manual of arms", which is why she is rightly comfortable with relying on one for self-defense. Which isn't to say that she should always be wedded to a revolver to the exclusion of everything else. My wife of 53 years also prefers a revolver to defend herself (as do I, depending on the circumstance) but she is not afraid to get acquainted with something different, like a semi-auto pistol, and to become competent with it over time. In the case of my wife, it's doubtful that she will ever carry anything in her purse or have on her nightstand anything other than a revolver but I'm glad that she now also enjoys shooting an auto. There's no downside to being familiar and competent with all different kinds of firearms for all different kinds of reasons.

The downside is he wants his wife to, but his wife doesn't want to. Your wife made her own choice to get acquainted with something different. He should respect her choice and allow her to make her own choices and come to her own conclusions IMHO.

"What do the ladies carry?" Colt King Cobra.

My home defense gun is an AR.

Reasoning:
For carry I prefer a revolver because of KISS. Getting G-d forbid attacked on the street would be extremely stressful, I don't want to have to worry about racking a slide, or maybe holding it not quite right and causing a malfunction. Plus I don't hear well and can't run, so it might be very up close and personal, a revolver will fire with the muzzle pressed right into BG.

For home defense, my house is very well hardened, a random robber is gonna give up and go elsewhere... an actual break-in would likely be more than one person so I need more capacity, and the hardening gives me time to get to my defensive position and put muffs on.
.......................
All that said, I was recently thinking it would be a good idea to go rent a Glock and get somewhat competent with it in case I'm ever in a situation where I have to use BG's gun, I figure Glocks are the most popular now. I shot a few semi-autos in my first gun class but not since.

Sounds like she doesn't need any experience with them.
I've got 8 semiautos and 4 revolvers. I like them all, but carry a revolver.

Ruger LCP, plus there is a Glock 26 stored in the trunk of her car with some other emergency items in a backpack.
