What Do You Carry?

No i get it i totally do.. its not a great choice in 2021 lol... But i do ask whats the diff between them and a modern revolver ? Mine are reliable. Theyre just bigger.. You could also go to a sheriff version with a 5.5 inch barrel so it isnt as obnoxious in size. The 1851 navy are also smaller and weighs less than the larger framed remington 1858 and the 1860 army.

All im saying is as much as i like my 1911. And i do not deny its a better choice if you plan to unload the mag in 2 seconds.. or do a mag dump on a glock. Im just saying 6 is plenty for me. And my 6 so far hasnt had 1 issue. I am not lying when i say this but i havent had a cap jam or missfire or chain fire or anything yet in probably 2000 rounds fired.

The only time this does happen is when the guns foul out. I had a big thread like 30 pages long on people discussing this when i asked.. so i dont want this thread to turn into that as its been beaten to death.

Im just answering this threads question on what do you carry and why. And no i dont do it to show off.. i do it to make sure ppl stay the f away from me. And its worked beautifully so far. Been around many cops in places that ban guns but dont have the signs on the doors.. and the cops never even looked or gave a sh. Dress nicely.. be polite.. dont be a bum and you wont be stereotyped

Not even close to my first choice but whatever works, an awful lot of weight for my belt surely.

Question I have is how often to you clear the cylinders and reload? Weekly practice? Longer?

Also reminds me, again, I need to get my 1858 Rem out again some day soon, it’s been a good number of years since I’ve shot it.

For pocket carry I have my KelTec P3AT, along with a DeSantis Nemesis holster it's virtually invisible to any observer. For my J frames, a Model 649 and a Model 638, along with a Kahr CM9, I prefer an IWB holster like a DeSantis Sof-Tuck. If it's cooler weather out then I might carry anything from a CZ P01, HK P229, Ruger SR9c, or a Colt Commander in an OWB holster under a vest or a jacket. I like to use the DeSantis Mini-Scabbard, L-Gat Slide, E-Gat slide, Bianchi Minimalist, and an old Bianchi Askin's Avenger holster.

I shoot them every weekend sometimes 2 days.. like friday and sat.. or sat and sunday.

Occasionally though i go two weeks with em loaded and shoot my other guns instead. Never had em loaded longer than 4 weeks. But they hold up fine loaded for 2-3 weeks.. and remember i live in virginia its humid here.. the guns sweat when i go from inside the cold house to hot outside. And ive walked with them in the rain before and they shot fine a few days later.

I load them with 30 FFFG including the brass one. 457 balls. And i use RWS 1075 caps on them. I used to use a lube like a kind of wax over the balls.. but i dont do thwt anymore. Just a waste of money.. i noticed no diff in accuracy with or without lube. And with 457 balls it seal up great.

I did jusy buy a 1858 remington brass.. and a brass 1858 sheriff yesturday... but judging how vastly heavier they are and how the hammer spring tention feels 2x more than on my navies. I probably would never carry those. With a hammer spring with thwt much tension it would drastically reduce the speed i could fire the guns.

Oh and i forgot for weigjt.. Im 300 lbs and 6'1 i wear a really nice leather belt with a steel belt inside. Honestly. I dont notice the weight on me, probsbly because im a big guy and 4-5 lbs of guns isnt noticable.. Being honest.. The only thing that bugs me is driving with them holstered. I will unclip them and put them in the glove box with the holsters. Then when i get out ill clip em back on. The hammers dig into my side and well the near 8 inch long barrels can be awkward.

My main two carry guns are a Sig P365XL 9mm loaded with Winchester One 147 grain. Other is a S&W 442 loaded with Speer Gold Dot 135 grain Short Barrel.

Which one I pick is mostly dictated by what Im wearing and if Im going to carry on the belt (Sig) or pocket carry (S&W).

In a steel frame at least, the 1858’s design enables hotter loads then a Colt, and was/is less susceptible to the issues of cap jams, etc that tend to crop up.

Hotter doesnt Always mean more velocity. I think i saw anything past 30-35 grains of 3f didnt increase velocity by much. And i use 30 in my 44cal 1851, but i dont have a chronograph to check it myself.

The more powder you stuff in there, the faster that round ball travels...

Not always. You will find that out when you get your first BP guns. Barrel length will give more speed than powder in some cases. That why I cautioned you against an Avenging Angel type revolver. Early rifles like Kentucky's had a long barrel to completely burn the powder. Black powder explodes on ignition but it has a very long burn time. Put extra powder in a BP gun and you don't get more velocity after a certain point because the barrel can't burn it all.

I mainly pocket carry. I work in our barn and kennels and anything on the belt gets banged around and dirty. Shaving bits and straw dust is hell on actions. Pocket carry keeps things covered up and accessible. Plus it fils the #1 rule of gun fighting, that is have a gun.

I mostly pocket carry with an Alabama Pocket Holster, Mika Pocket Holster, or Sticky Holster. All seem to work the best for me. If forced to, would pick the Mika or Sticky.

I have carried Ruger LCPII and the new LCP Max. I don’t feel they are that good of a pistol and their open area gets gunk and dust build up from the straw and shavings. Awaiting on the M&P BG380 to get a “Plus” treatment!

My top pocket carry is G42, P365(MS), or J Frame. They all seem to actually fit my pockets (brown work pants) and I can hit with them and they are reliable. The P365(MS) is going into a should holster once it gets here. It’s a but heavy for anything but winter weather pocket carry, for me, but still doable. Might get another 911-380 if I can find one, cause that was a great pistol (and others like it) for the pocket.

Good Luck!

I carry one or two of the five concealed carry guns I own. I've owned about two dozen concealed carry pistols over the last 16 years I've been carrying, and this ended up being the best for my personal needs. I basically have a small variety of guns for different carry needs based on what I am wearing and where I am going. I'm mentioning caliber because it will give clues as to why I chose to keep the guns I did (e.g. weight, caliber diversity, size, carry method, etc.):

Clockwise from the top left:

1. SIG Sauer P229 Enhanced Elite in .357 SIG (34 oz. as configured). I carry this AIWB usually with an extended magazine to give me 14+1 of that caliber. This is my favorite carry gun.

2. Beretta PX4 Storm Inox with upgrades from Langdon Tactical. This gun is almost 8 oz lighter and is thus chambered in 9mm. Sometimes I carry it like this, but I can often conceal the 19+1 magazine even under just a t-shirt (sometimes). I also carry this AIWB (alternating with the P229—one or the other is always by my bed). Thanks to Ernest Langdon, this a much faster gun than it would be otherwise now that it has a very short reset and relatively light trigger pull (6.5 lbs DA and 4.25 lbs SA). This is my next favorite carry gun. They offer a full grip and are thus faster to deploy. The rest I keep around for when I can't carry one of these or I want to carry more than one pistol (which is relatively rare).

3. Smith & Wesson Performance Center M&P9 M2.0 Shield (when I've had too much to eat). I carry this either IWB or AIWB (the holster is made for both). This isn't a Shield Plus, but it does carry 11 rounds with the Hyve magazine extension which hides perfectly well when I am carry appendix. I like this gun because, for a small and relatively light 9mm, it is ported to shoot flatter/faster.

4. Ruger LCP II in .380 ACP. I carry it in the pocket pretty much anytime I am just walking the dog or running a quick errand. The Active Self Protection YouTube channel has reviewed thousands of videos documenting gunfights, and he said that, generally speaking, the first person to shoot generally wins, so I try not to pocket carry when I am out and about unless I really NEED to ensure it's properly concealed (e.g. constitutional carry, if you know what I mean).

5. Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 Subcompact. This is my most flexible firearm. It's basically the S&W equivalent of the Glock 26 with a slightly longer barrel (3.6" v. 3.43") and two extra rounds, but the higher capacity magazines (15+1 and 17+1) mate more seamlessly than the Glock equivalents and I like the texture better (btw, I've owned six Glock pistols, two being G26's). I like both the S&W and Glock version. I wouldn't say one is better than the other if anyone is curious. It really is flexible as I don't feel the need to buy a full or compact-size M&P. I've included thumbnails with the different magazine options if anyone is again curious. It is the ability to use all these magazines that makes this a jack of all trades when it comes to concealed carry.

Some may frown but i dont care.

I usually carry a 1911, but most of the time i carry both of my 1851 navy in 44cal with all 6 loaded. And two spare cylinders. Frown all you want for open carry, and for black powder.. but ive had 0 jams and cap malfunctions on a clean black powder revolver. The jamming happens on a fouled out gun shot 24 times. In fact ive dozens of malfunctions with my 1911 and a glock. And none with my 1851s when theyre clean

Single action or not. The guns are light to me and the hammer spring is easy to cock. I can fire 12 shots from both guns in each hand in seconds.. and i hit center mass near bullseye at 15 yards out just fine with fast shooting.. i dont need to sit there abd aim for 5 seconds like most people do.. 15 yards may not seem far on a shooting range but it is in person for most altercations.. in fact 7 is probably more realistic.

I shoot these guns so much ive become extremely accurate and quick at firing them. And reloading takes less than 6 seconds for me. Thats slow compared to a magazine.. sure but still all together i have 24 shots on me. But 6-12 shots id say is plenty.

Open carry having a shoot me first thing.. hasnt been proven. Nore CAN it be proven that it deters anything because well it detered things and it never happened to be documented. Hense the word deter.

Maybe one day ill buy a small pocket autoloader and do conceal carry.. but i like my 1851s.

ONLY downside is the attention due to the size and them being (shiney) people arent used to brass. But in the end i still feel completetly safe in my ability to use them and carry them. Bash me all you want. All i gatta say is focus on yourself and worry less about what i do if you have something negative to say

I own two cap and ball revolvers and have never had a malfunction. If you feel comfortable and trust them carry on!

I carry a P220 in an Arratoonian holster on a Wilderness belt.

I Only pocket carry in very specific and rare occasions if it's very hot in summer and lightest of the light clothing is worn, and I'm going to wind up with my shirt off.
If this is the case, I carry my Beretta Jetfire .25 ACP in my right pocket.
I far favor 9mm or better for SD and am a true believer in my service calibers.....99.9% of the time.
Training drills for pocket draw are inconsistent and kinda sketchy when you really try to draw quick and deliberate. Its not smooth at all for me. I prefer a high quality IWB holster.

Rule one of the gun fight: Have a gun!

Second. if it comes down to quick draw, concealed carry will loose every time. Having a gun and situational awareness so you have the gun in hand when needed is your only real option if you can't open carry, and open carry has the "shoot me first!" problem when SHTF.
I heard that pocket carry can be faster in some situations. For example, in a coat pocket one might have their hand already holding the gun in a dangerous situation and able to either pull it quickly, or even shoot through the coat.

For this reason my summertime carry turns into my BUG
