Howdy!

I was wondering if any of you have done any testing with Interceptor/SAPI-type armor plates. I am wondering what exactly it takes to penetrate them. I know, for instance, that a .50 BMG with any type of bullet will blow right through them, but that they are rated to stop one round from a .30-06 M2 AP ball.

However, I know that the .30-06 rounds designed for the M1 Garand, such as the M2 AP ball that they use in those tests, were not particularly high-powered, and was wondering if anyone has experimented with hotter hand loads or higher-power cartridges on ceramic plate armor, and what your results were.

With hand-loading and the right bullet, do you think Level IV plate armor could be defeated by a .308? A .30-06? A .300 Win Mag? What exactly do you think it would take?

I would be interested to know the results of any testing anyone has done on ceramic plate armor.

Thanks,

henschman

Some countries, including Russia have developed high velocity .22 caliber guns that fire two rounds in such rapid succession that the first will crack the plate and second land close enough to hit and penetrate the damagaed area. The AN94 is such a gun from Russia from which the initial two round bust is fired at a rate of 1800 rpm. As i understand it a ceramic plate is only capable of withstanding one round from common infantry rifles calibers.

That makes sense,JustinJ. That is the same way one gets thru bullet tempered glass, so I am told. I hope the OP gets no knocks on the door.

Yes, I've heard about the AN-94. Actually a lot of these Level IV plates are rated to stop multiple hits from intermediate-power rounds like the 5.45x39, and they frequently won't even crack with one hit from something like that; so I have doubts as to whether it would work on one of them... but in any event, I am trying to figure out what it takes to penetrate a plate with a single shot. I have seen plenty of posts and videos on the interweb of people testing this armor, and usually the armor tends to fare pretty well against standard surplus ammo. But have any of you taken it upon yourselves to see what it will take to defeat it? I am thinking of trying some tests on it, but if anyone else has tried it I'd like to see their results.

If anyone knows a good cheap source for surplus plates I would appreciate it, too.

Why would you like to know? Seems fishy!
Yeah, since there could be no possible good reason why anyone might ever need to shoot a person wearing this type of armor.

I don't want to get this thread closed and have to start another -- so please nobody make comments like that national guard one. I'm just interested in anyone's experiences with testing ceramic plate armor, and opinions on what it would take to penetrate it with a single shot.

Someone who threatens others with death or grave bodily harm while wearing such armor, I suppose.

"What ifs" are not what I wanted this thread to be about though, so let's please try to get back on topic. Please don't post unless you have an opinion about what it would take to penetrate ceramic plate, have conducted a test on ceramic plate, or know of a source to buy ceramic plate for testing.

Thanks,

IMO it's questions like this that would get the attention of the WRONG people,, surprised Mod's havn't closed it yet,,
