It's 1865, I own an 1858 Remington and I've fired 2 shots killing my rabbit. Do I have to waste my remaining shots just so I can clean my handgun?

Ok I lied, it's 2015 and I've just used 2 shots to kill a sick possum. Do I need to waste my remaining shots to clean my gun?

In 1865 you would.
Because caps were corrosive potassium chlorate back then.

Now they are not.

You could run a oiled patch down the two fired chambers, and the bore, and then shoot the other 4 and clean it good then!!

And you could use a shovel to kill the possum next time and not have to worry about it.

I also could have used the 22 next to the door, but I have limited experience shooting black powder and thought it was a good time to see how it performed on something other than cans and boards.

Just use BP solvent (I use isopropyl alcohol) to clean the used chambers and barrel and oil. I hunt with mine all the time and that's what I do.

Of course it was a BIG possum....i'm in Texas haven't u heard about everything here? lol I missed the first shot, which is why it took 2. I should have taken a picture but the possum looked a lot like a dog with mange.

It had been loaded for 3? months.

A few years ago I learned a valuable lesson re. Brother Possum.....
NEVER kill a home invading possum with a sharp Katana in your home. It's very messy and very stinky........ :banghead:
Second time I used a .22 Colibri pointblank to the head. Didn't kill him immediately. Found him under my home dead later.
Using a black powder revolver would have woke the neighbors at zero-dark-thirty, and it would have gotten the house full of stinking smoke.
