Today I cracked out the old 22 just for fun. On the first round it went "putt" and smoke came from every where around the action and I felt sandy stuff hit under my eye! So I went inside got a cleaning rod and pushed out both bullet and case!
What is at fault the ammo (old , I do not know what kind) ,Or the marlin mod 60?:uhoh:

i don't know, the shape of the case failure suggests to me the action didn't go fully into battery...

I've had that happen with my wife's Rock River LAR-15 in 22LR, except that the round fired. The shell casing did just that though; instead of ejecting the base of the casing blew out and stuck it to the bolt face. I chalk it up to my using cheap 22LR ammo.

Ditto...unsupported Case...fired somehow, while not being fully in the Chamber.

Yup, been there before... with the same gun too. Glad it was only a .22!
Mine was caused mostly by old/cheap ammo and a dirty action. I tore it straight down to itty bitty parts and replaced the buffer, scrubbed everything down, and put it back together with a light coat of oil and shes back to a sweet shooter again.
