"Bushmaster Auto Rifle" is a named item on the ban. This is section 1.. section 2 is the "features" section of law which you describe that bans weapons by combination of "features".
Realizing that there has been more inaccurate and just wrong information about this case than there is in Grimm's Fairy Tales -- one of the stories was that she showed her "new" AR to her gardener. If she purchased it in Connecticut it would have needed to be "compliant", and not an assault rifle under the Connecticut definition.
Even Colt, I think, called the AR15 something else after the ban, ground off the bayonet lug and included a 10 round magazine -- and it was legal again. Colt still ships with 10 round mags AFAIK. Whoever identified it as a "Bushmaster automatic rifle" may have been speaking generically. Bushmaster sure sells a lot of different compliant versions -- even more than I would have guessed. http://www.bushmaster.com/firearms/state_compliant.asp
No doubt the Bushmaster was illegal in that he stole it and the pistols would be illegal just because of his age.
Also, I have a friend on FB that posted: "Would someone please tell me why I should have the right to buy an assult weapon"? How would you respond to that question?
