Another vote for the old S&W Model 27 or 28 (if you're not looking for looks). They shoot great right out of the box, and can be tuned to unbelievable accuracy.
IMO, the best overall would be the 19/66.
I love the 586/686 but prefer the handling characteristics of the K-frame a little better.
I've owned two 28's in 4" & 6", and found them wonderful to shoot, but a little heavy for extended carry.
@ valnar:
I don´t know anything about it - my gunsmith offered me the complete bundle, what means:
- new gun out of the box (686)
- bull-barrel
- grip
- customizing
- full chrome-nitrite-coating (not chrome-nitrate)
my vote goes for the gp-100. mine shoots 5 shots just over 1.50" at 25 yards with the factory sites and 158 cast handloades. bought the gun recently and have not had time to shoot at longer ranges with various loads.
Hey Oneshot, nice .357 there. I thought of the M27 at first, but really prefer a 4" barrel, or the 3 1/2"er M27, and didn't want to even think about changing such a fentastic revolver.
No doubt about it. A nickle plated Colt Python .357Mag with a six inch barrel. Best gun I ever or probably ever will have owned. I kick myself in the buttinski everytime I think about it. BUT when your an E-6 with five head of younguns back in the 1960's military and someone offers you $1000.00 for your prize gun your pappy gave to you, it doesn't take long to make up your mind to sell.
My Dad was a LEO generations ago and he left me some fine old guns, a .38Spl Police Positive which my sisters husband and her kids ruined and a Colt .38Spl Nickle plated Dick Special which looks brand new and I will never part with it. But I sure do miss that Python, dam------------------- John
