What is the most recent knife you bought?

Artisan Cutlery Valor. S35VN. Ferrum Forge design.

Lighting makes it look blue. It’s not. It’s gray.

love everything about it, but that pivot. Looks like a swastika.

I’ve often wondered why they don’t change their logo

It’s terrible

That was my first thought when I saw your pictures. Not a fan of that design.

The funny thing is there was a huge thread on Bladeforums about this as well that basically went the same way:

"It looks like a swastika."
"It's not a swastika."
"I know, I'm just saying that when you glance at it the first thing you think of is 'swastika.'"
"Swastikas aren't inherently bad you know."
"I'm just saying that maybe if your logo looks geometrically a bit like a swastika, it might just be better to have a logo that makes people think of something... other than a swastika?"

Yes, it's true that the swastika is a shape used in a lot of cultures and that only in Nazi Germany did it develop terrible emotional and cultural connotations, but the simple fact is that A) in most of the world, Nazi Germany is the best-known of the cultures that used the swastika and the one that comes to mind first, B) it was one of the main symbols of their political regime, unlike in most other cultures using the swastika shape, where it was relatively unimportant or simply one of many symbols, and C) just as a matter of branding and economics, would you really want there to be widespread discussion of how much your brand logo resembles a swastika at all? Because that just seems like an unforced error in terms of marketing.

It doesn’t look much like a swastika. You would pretty much have to be looking for a swastika to see that as one.

The last knife I bought is this Case Stockman, which arrived today. The blades are chrome vanadium steel. The spey and sheepsfoot came just shaving sharp while the clip blade is just short of shaving sharp. They should sharpen up easily enough. Shown with a Victorinox Pioneer for scale.

My pre-order for new Hogue Deka Polymer in MagnaCut came in.

I just saw that SMKW is doing an exclusive Case Marilla in MagnaCut soon, so that's probably my next buy.

I was a bit sad that the handle was FRN instead of G10. The Hogue Deka is basically just a better-made Benchmade Griptilian with a bit different blade and better materials and fit and finish for basically the same price. It's a definite sleeper in the crowded <$200 market.

I picked up this oddball, Spyderco Spyopera with brown Micarta and M390. I am curious if it was heat treated to Spyderco’s M390 (higher than 60) or Lionsteel’s (~58 to 60). I prefer the higher HRC overall. I really like the look and feel of this weird thing! The spine and lock hardware are crowned and it’s running on bearings. Action is fantastic.

Benchmade 485 Valet. My new "office knife." I'd been looking for something discreet, but serviceable. Found it!

It's not nearly as sharp (in my highly-accurate paper-slicing test) as I thought it would be. So I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to fit this one on the Hapstone.
Got three CRKT Offbeat II. Sharp like a something other. I like it. One to keep. Two to give away. Impressed.

I bought one of those when they were on sale for about $20. It's a lot of knife for that price.

Impressions of the Hogue? I'm already eyeing my next knife, and I've got half a mind to go with something in Magnacut.

LionSteel is absolutely prime when it comes to crowning and beveling edges. There's never a sharp edge on their knives except the cutting edge! However I agree, the Maniago knife makers (LionSteel, Fox, Viper) run M390 too soft, and I don't really get it.

The expiration of the Axis lock patent was a great thing for the knife industry, as was Doug Ritter going to Hogue. The Deka and the Ritter RSK are simply just better Benchmade Griptilians with better materials and fit and finish at basically the same prices. I really need Knifeworks to run an exclusive Deka in Magnacut and polished black paper micarta.

Like your Case three bladed Stockman. That was the first Case knife I bought some 44 years ago!

I like the looks of that.

To continue the thread...

I just picked up a Gerber Dime multitool, which has a small knife blade and a blade intended for cutting open blister packs in it, among other tools. I added it to the toolkit on my road bike so I have a small set of pliers in case I need to grab onto something while I'm out for a ride. It's so small and light it isn't noticeable in the bag.

Shown next to a Victorinox Fieldmaster (3.5" long) for scale.

I have one of those and paired it up with my KelTec P3AT for when I was working in the backyard. Made for a nice lightweight knife and gun combo.

Interesting, curious what a blade designed to open blister packs looks like, please.

Hook blades for utility knives do a good job of liberating the contents without lacerating it. My Leatherman wingman has a blade for this purpose with a blunt end and a rear-facing edge, so the blade can be pulled through the plastic without loss of control. I believe the dime's is similar.

The second knife I ever owned was an Imperial Kamp King scout knife. Somewhere along the line it got lost. I just picked up this one on eBay. There are a lot of these old knives on eBay but most of them are well used. This one is practically new. The blade will cut paper but I should be able to get it to shave without too much work.

Next to a Victorinox Pioneer X for scale.
