What is this shotgun used for?

meat getter...deer, bear; top barrel slug, bottom barrel buckshot

defense...bear, wolf, cougar, etc; top barrel slug (if you want deep penetration), bottom barrel buckshot; or buckshot, buckshot

Barrel length has nothing at all to do with pattern spread.

Well, purely in theory, a longer barrel will have less pressure at the muzzle, which will disturb the wad and shot less.

Of course, in practice, a ported barrel reduces muzzle pressure even more than a very long barrel, and how much does porting improve patterning? Very little, if at all.

But in theory, a longer barrel may produce 0.01% tighter patterns. :p

I am going to be moving out and starting my own family sometime within the next year, and I am pretty sure I'm not going to be able to take "my" skeet gun with me. I am thinking about getting one of these as an all-purpose (I already have an HD dedicated Maverick, but I wouldn't use it for much else). With interchangeable chokes I figure it should be able to do just about anything... From skeet and dove to hogs and anything else that needs to be shot. Gonna try to get my hands on one and see how it swings and points.

What rcmodel said

That is controlled by the choke.

That Stoeger Outback has screw-in choke tubes.
So if you put a Full choke tube in one barrel and an Imp Cyl tube in the other, it would give you two different size, but good patterns at any range.

There is no reason a 20" barrel wouldn't pattern as good as a 30" barrel if they both had the same choke constriction in them."

I have a Spartan Coach with 20" barrels. Haven't tried it yet for clays but my gunsmith assured me that 20" is plenty long enough for the powder to burn. It's all in the chokes.

I use a coach gun for grouse hunting in thick Minnesota woods.
very quick handling and easy to carry.

During deer season you could slug one hole just in case.

I have a 12 gauge Condor, it came with rudimentary rifle sights which I have battered into some semblance of accuracy for the upper barrel with buck and slugs. I added it to my tactical/military SG collection even though there is no documented use of an O/U in that trade. But probably because no one thought of it till now.
Very nice and rugged little gun for just about any purpose. I got 3 more choke tubes for it(one rifled), and it will do anything a much more expensive gun will do, now if only I can figure out a bayonet lug for it.......

A lot of places in the world only allow you to have single loader shotguns, no pump/auto. In these places, this is a great Self/Home Defence weapon.
Also some folks simply prefer the sight picture and handling of a over/under. For these folks, this is their kind of coach gun.

Especially the 20 gauge would make a sweet early season squirrel gun for when the leaves are on the trees. One barrel IC choke and a 7/8 ounce load for close shots, one barrel full choke and a heavier load for way up in the big trees.
