I've been looking at .45 ACP revolvers lately, and have been impressed with the Taurus Tracker and the S&W 25/625. I like the combination of revolver reliability (take it out of the nightstand/glovebox after a two-year storage and it still fires) and .45 knock-down power.
Anyway, I was wondering what were the favorite .45 ACP revolvers of THR members. I saw a recent thread re: the 625, so I'm sure the S&W crowd will be well represented.
Well, have at it. What is your favorite?
Thanks,

David

I have two: an S&W 25-2, 6-1/2" and a Ruger 200th year Convertible Blackhawk, 7-1/2". Both were great shooters out of the box...I have reference targets for both showing X-ring Bullseye accuracy with their favorite target type loads.
That said, the Blackhawk, which can keep all its shots around an inch at 25 yds offhand with a cast semiwadcutter and under two inches at 50 yds with really heavy 'hunting' loads that would split the cylinder on the S&W, has to be my favorite. Plus it shoots very well with the .45 Long Colt cylinder, adding versatility. The Blackhawk shoots everything from pussycat rounds at 850 fps to real volcanics in the 1200 fps range, without a worry.
If I had to have just one, I'd probably opt for a 4 5/8" Blackhawk Convertible, with a stainless grip frame and extractor rod housing swapped in, and maybe one of those 50th Anniversary Micro rear sights if I could get it, or a Bowen if I couldn't. If you can't do it with that set-up, you can't do it!!

Ruger Convertible, 4 5/8" blue. It shoots like a house afire in ACP. I get more leading that I like with my cast bullets but boy, does it shoot. Not too bad in .45 Colt, either.

What I like about it is that it weighs in at around 38 ounces, which is pretty light these days for a bigbore revolver. Some of the stuff out there these days resembles the old mountain howitzer requiring a mule to transport it.

I loved my BH convertible... but, it was a SA - and a bit slow to load. I was switching over from my G21 and semi-auto's in general, and had lots of .45 ACP ammo to shoot up. It was great fun, but opened another door - the .45 Colt.

Three years ago, I added a 4" 625-8 in .45ACP/AR to my collection. I tried to wear it out over the next twenty months - probably at least 8-10k rounds through it before I sent it 'home' for a tightened b/c gap. A range-mate offered me a lot more than a new one ran - knowing it had just come back from S&W the day before. I said 'good-bye' to the ACP-launcher - even gave away my moonclips, AR speedloaders, and ammo. I reasoned that, since it was a full-lu, and I don't like full-lugs, I'd never miss it. My wife found the stash-o-cash, and we had a nice Gulf Shores vacation - the last before Ivan, Dennis, and Katrina would re-arrange that area.

Within days, I missed that revolver. It was a frugal big bore... and, only when I cleaned it would I notice that full lug. It would be nearly seven months before I would replace it with another 625-8 4"-er... the new-for-05 625JM I have mentioned here since buying mine in early Feb... great bargain! I am trying to wear it out, too... of course, as it is just fun. I reload, so I can detune it a tad - using 4.5gr Titegroup under a 230gr Berry's plated FMJ gives ~805 fps and a fast-to-follow-up plinker. The AR's I load from mild on up - great little rounds! I won't let this one go... it is the finest, most fun straight from the box (Almost - I did swap the hammer spring for a Wolff reduced power... and only use Federal primers, of course!) .45 ACP launcher I have ever owned. I can live with the satin SS and full lug, and that "J M" logo... sorry Jerry Miculek, my wife say's it means 'John's Money'!

I have two, both of which are great guns, but for different purposes. The first acquired is a Smith stainless 625 with a 5" barrel that shoots incredibly...far better than I can hold. Great at the range and for target games. The other is a Smith scandium 325 with a 3" barrel (and an action job) that is a great shooter as well, but best suited for "serious" purposes. Neither of these guns can be beat for their intended uses.

I notice that the last two replies come from the Great State of Alabama.
I am moving there next month (to work in Montgomery, sleep in Prattville AKA "Pleasantville" ;) ).

I have two also. A Webley MkVI using .45 Auto Rim reloads and an Aldo Uberti SAA, .45 Colt, with 4 3/4" barrell. I bought the Uberti with some doubts as to the quality, but it has proved foolproof. In fact, comparing it with my Second Generation Colt SAA in .44 Special I can see no appreciable difference in trigger pull and overall finish.

625, 4". Mild and accurate with major-power reloads for shooting games (idpa/uspsa), where a round-nosed bullet gives it an unbeatably fast revolver reload; or, still very comfortable and controllable with 45ar loads in Starline brass using Penn bullets' excellent 255 gr. SWC at 900 fps (equivalent of a classic 45 Colt load); or, a bit more abrupt but very handle-able with that 255 gr. SWC going 1100 fps for a serious woods-walkin' gun.

Fun, fast, and flexible.

My .45 ACP revolvers are a S&W Model 25-2, that I got 30 yrs ago, and has had the barrel trimmed to 5" and an action job and narrow smooth trigger by the Performance Center. Shoots very nicely.
My other .45 ACP revolvers are stainless .45 Colt Ruger NMBHs, with 5 1/2" barrels, Wolff springs and a nice action job. I used 2 of them for several years in CAS. They are beautifully smooth and shoot very well. They are great for shooting inexpensive military ball, particularly stuff like Wolf, so you don't have to bother with cases.

I have missed the Ruger Blackhawk convertible ever since I let it go in a trade. Both 45 Colt and 45 ACP shot great in it, and it was veeeeerrrrrry versatile with a full range of possibilities just by changing the cylinder or the ammo.

My current favorite is the Taurus 455 Tracker 4" in 45 ACP. 45 ACP knockdown in a revolver, fast reloads with stellar clips, ribber grips to absorb recoil from hot loads, ported, lifetime warranty, and it fits the same holsters as my 7-shot 357 Mag and 5-shot 44 Mag. If it would just shoot 45AR so that I could carry six in loops for a tactical reload.

Good shootin'....

Cookekdjr,

Another big welcome to Alabama, David! If you find yourself up this way want to visit a great range near Birmingham, the 'FOP Range Inc' in Pleasant Grove, contact me.

What is your favorite .45 ACP revolver?

Tough call. Really. I have a bag full to choose from. But if I had to pick... it would probably be the 625 V-Comp.

Wait... maybe it would be the PC625.

Or possibly... Oh heck, I like them all!!
