but the only single shot i have experience with is a cricket :) and that's technically my daughter's

Single shot bolt action, 30-06, chambered for the 208 AMAX. There is nothing that you cannot do with that. Maybe not stop a charging nasty beast, but I live in Alabama.....

For centerfire, nothing compares to the sex appeal of a No. 1.

For rimfires, is hard to beat a Kimber 82G.

I have both and love them to pieces. I also have a T/C Encore and it's my workhorse, but nothing special.

One elk, one moose, 3 mule deer, a couple of antelope and who knows how many varmints.

Grandpappy's rusted old barn rifle that I bubbaized into something useful.

Rolling block, hands down. I have built two myself out of blocks of steel, which were covered extensively in the previous thread "why no new rolling blocks?"

I have just picked up a 1902 in 7mm which is in fantastic shape with case hardening colors visible on the receiver. Good bore and it shoots into an inch at fifty yards. Too bad the group is a foot high and six inches to the right. Ill have to work on that....

My favorite is the Martini action. Well maybe, except for the Sharps, Ruger, or Winchester drop-blocks. And then there is the rolling block which I really like and have several in various calibers, and the Trap-door Springfields and Sniders. Of course, I don't want to leave out my NEF and H&R break actions or the T/C Encores, or maybe my ol' Remington M41 and 510 .22 rim fire bolt action and the Flobert parlour rifle. There is of course also my Lee Enfield No.8Mk1, and No2Mk1 single shot rifles and my Marlin 2000, both of which will shot 5 shots into a dime-size group at 100 yards.

Hell, I guess I never found a single shot rifle I didn't like! As with your kids, do you really have a favorite?

I have shot a couple antiques, two #1's, and some Thompson Contenders (which are for sale if anyone is interested...)
The .45-70 #1 was not the precision target rifle I expected: the 22-250 was. (But we loaded those bullets 'elephant' hot and they were a hoot!)

My newest toy in 45-70. Browning 1885 High Wall falling block.

Well first of all It would be a toss up of my 1874 Sharps, or my Springfield Trapdoor. However I do enjoy shooting my Stevens Crackshot, as well as my Thompson Contenders, in 30-30, .223, 22LR all scoped. What can I say I like single shot rifles.

Late Model Browning single shot in 25/06. I would assume it is a variant of a Win High Wall of some kind but of modern steel, construction, and appearance. Made in Belgium.

Soon as I read the thread title I thought Marlin Ballard. Is that company still making reproductions? I remember there ad in rifle magazine years ago.

I've got 5 single shots:

1 Shiloh 74 in .45-100
2 Ballard made High-Walls in .40-70 and .45-90
1 Ballard made Low-Wall in .22LR
1 Austrian Schuetzen rifle in 8.15x46R based on a Martini Henry

By far my favorite has to be the WIN 1885, light action, self cocking on closure, pretty fast lock time, with some camming capability.

Chuck

Not shown my Stevens little scout .22, the Remington #2 Rolling Block in 25-20 with a Harry Pope barrel, the 3 Contenders and the 20 barrels and various others including more Martinis and Rolling blocks ect.

There are some beautiful single shot rifles posted here, I have trapdoor carbines, rolling blocks and Win dropping block but my favorite is a AAC Handi Rifle in 300 Blackout that I took a 350 pound boar with Tuesday. The rifle has a 16" barrel, can be carried all day without fatigue and is an excellent 100 yard rifle for hogs or deer with it's 3x Nikon scope. Plus with low sound and recoil it is fun to shoot.

single shots

I am clumsy. My father referred to me as a hog on ice. My drill sergeants felt Dad had insulted the hog. I fall a lot, even more with age. Thus I have developed a fondness for crack barrels with hammers. I have a 500S&W Handi rifle which I love and call the " blunderbust". It is the only rifle I have ever seen that will shoot half inch groups at virtually any range. Is has never been polluted with factory ammo. I have seen people deride the strength of Handi's but they were brought out when the 500S&W was rated at 65,000 psi and the 500S&W has a larger area at the inside of the head than the belted magnums. I would think you could rechamber a Handi in 45-70 to 458 Win or Lott. BTW this gun was purchased only for fun and it has not disappointed.
