What kind of ammo do yall use most often and prefer in your various guns? Brand? Grain? Type?

Personally I am simple and in my rifles tend to use just plain federal power shock ammo. It is good, reliable, and pretty darned accurate and is a good price to boot. In my 30-30 I use it as 150 grain, SD/HD is winchester silvertip CX2 170 grain ammo. Rimfire 22 LR is good old rem bulk packs, sure it is more dirty but in my rifles its the most accurate and reliable....even if the bullets do tent to spin in the cases lol. Varminters from CCI for the big stuff and as my secondary SD/HD ammo.

So whats the favorites for you all?

I use IMR surplus 4895 for 30-30,.223, 30-06, .303. Reddot for all the pistol calibers. I use Rem 150g corelok bullets for 30-30, surplus pulls for the military guns, Berry's plated bullets for all the hand guns. I loaded 50 rounds of 30-30 using 30g of IMR 4895 and 150g .308 surplus spire points for target ammo to sight in a new scope. Funny, they hit 8" lower than the coreloks at 100 yds.

practice ammo

9mm 115gr wwb value packs.
.40 s&w 165gr wwb value packs, various handloads
Rainnier bullets with power pistol powder, unique, winchester 231 etc.
.223/ 5.56 umc 55gr fmj, and 62gr green tip m855
7.62x39 Wolf 154gr sp (most accurate i have found, by wolf)
12ga s&b "00" buck.
.22 what ever they got that is cheap, normally winchester.

.22 - Federal Champion (smoky, but accurate and cheap enough to buy in bulk)
8mm - Yugo surplus for my M48, Romanian for the Hakim, just got some 50s Romanian
7.5x55mm - GP11 Swiss surplus
7.62x54R - SVT seems to like the Russian yellow tip, the Hungarian is a bit sticky and seems to be loaded a bit hotter

Mostly handloads. Usually Gold dots for SD in the handguns, except for LSWC in the 38. Low recoil buckshot in the scattergun for SD.

  • .45 ACP - Handloads - charge depends on whether I'm shooting it out of a 3", 4" or 5" barrel. For SD Hornady 230 gr XTP's and for range 230 gr FMJ.
  • 45 Colt - Handloads - 200 gr LRNFP or 250 gr LRNFP or 255 gr LSWC all pushed to high 800's low 900's
  • .44 Mag 240 gr JSP handloads - various charges but I like 'em to pop out of the barrel around 1250 FPS or so.
  • .40 S&W 180 gr FMJ Wolf range - SD Speer GD 165 gr
  • .38 Spl 158 gr FMJ S&B
  • .38 Spl 130 gr Speer GD SD
  • .357 Mag 158 gr FMJ S&B
  • 9mm 115 gr FMJ Wolf
  • 7.62X39 122 gr FMJ Wolf
  • 7.62X51 NATO 147 gr mil-surp - anything but Indian
  • .308 Win - see 7.62X51 NATO - works fine out of my bolt gun

I shoot handloads in all my centerfire arms. I have fine tuned them for maximum accuracy. I am olso one of those freaks that measures and weighs his rimfire ammo for accuracy.

IMHO opinion www.doubletapammo.com sells the best "woods/hiking/hunting" rounds available. Their personal defense rounds are great for people living in more rural areas. It's hot stuff, with amazing penetration. Not the cheapest, but it is the best!!!! Buy some, check it out, and stoke your hiking weapon with it. I'm not associated in any way with Double Tap. I am a shooter with 42 years shooting experience, including reloading. It's good stuff, trust me.
