What not to put in your pocket?

I'd like to glean your brain for information. Sort of what not to do information...
Years past I packed a Beretta Tomcat as an always gun in my pocket...have moved up to a PM9.
I tried to keep my right hand front pocket as a dedicated pocket (Used only as a pocket holster for my Beretta.)
I tend to put a lot of things in my pocket...sometimes I forget and put the loose change in there. I also used to have a Lifesaver from time to time. Coins and Lifesavers found their way into the trigger guard between the guard and the trigger, effectively blocking your ability to get your finger on the trigger and stopping your capability to pull it to save your life.
I ended up crimping the trigger guard to prevent junk from getting into that space.
What other things shouldn't you put in your pocket with your pocket gun?
With the PM9 I don't seem to have any problems.

Any other items that don't belong in that pocket? What problems have you had?
 
I'd say that ANYTHING you put in there could have a negative effect of one sort or another.
 
What should go in your pocket with a pocket gun? A pocket holster to keep the gun properly oriented for the draw and to protect the trigger from fumbling fingers. They don't have to be expensive to work.

What shouldn't go in your pocket with your pocket gun? Anything beside the gun and holster, maybe an extra mag if the holster is set up for it.

If you're going to carry a pistol, you should take the time to pick up a well-made holster designed for the model of gun you are carrying. There are a number of companies that offer well-made pocket holsters.
 
You all must wear looser jeans than I do to be able to conceal a Kahr in a front pocket. I would be very conspicuous doing this. I carry IWB if it's too warm for a jacket. Besides, that way you don't have to worry about change or jolly ranchers finding their way into the gun. Just imagine what a dime or paperclip lodged in the slide somewhere could do :eek:
 
Cargo pants/solid-color BDUs and a Bersa Thunder .380--the only thing that goes in the same pocket is the reload. If it didn't work, then it wouldn't've been used for... about four months now.

I would go along with nothing more pointy than a tennis ball.

I have no experience with this, but I would think a pen/pencil would be able to fire the gun in the right circumstances.
 
The only thing that goes in the same pocket with my 642 is its holster. I even try to keep the pocket lint out.
 
Things not to put in the same pocket as your gun on a hot day? Hmmm...

Bag of Gummi Bears or Twinkies. Cigarette lighter (the fluid can destroy bluing). Cigarettes (the loose tobacco can get in the works. Anything metal with edges, like keys or a folding knife. Anything that could catch the trigger.

Basically, anything. Especially not Twinkies.
 
If your going to pocket carry The pistol and the holster period. If your down behind somthing(cover) on your knees how you going to get that mag out of pocket in a hurry. If I carry a spare mag for my PPK or Mustang Its in a nylon knife sheath on my belt where I can reach very quick.

The right front pocket of my coat and the left front pocket of my jeans are always empty for this reason. Unless of course I have my PM9 or a spare 1911 magazine.
 
If you believe that you need to carry a gun in your pocket then there should be nothing else in that pocket except the gun in it's holster. Since anything else in that pocket could prevent you from having a fully operational weapon when you need it what other junk could be important enough to stick in there with it. :scrutiny:
 
I have to agree with the "nothing but the holstered gun" crowd. Too many concerns of interfereing with the draw, interfereing with the gun's function, harming the gun, etc. For me, even the reload goes in a different pocket. It's going to be a hard enough draw, I don't need anything else in the way.
 
My boss has a nice briar pipe in a shadowbox hanging on the wall. It's big one with a thick, natural burl bowl and a jagged hole in the side of it.

He used to smoke a pipe a lot, now just cigars, but he likes to smoke and shoot. (I have video of him chomping a churchill and shooting the mover for the Bianchi Cup!) Anyway, he was shooting small bore pistol one time years ago, had a few loose rounds in his pocket, stuffed his pipe down there too. Pipe still had a good ember going and got one of the rounds in the bowl and hot enough to blow. Blew out a hole in the pipe, ripped his pants, and chucked him in the thigh a bit. Scary when it happened, but it's a funny story around here now days.

+1, with one exception: a speedloader. When I pocket carry, all other stuff I'm carrying goes into the other pocket, or is left home. Period. I not only wouldn't want to have something interfere with my ability to pull the trigger, I wouldn't want anything that would impede my ability to get the gun out quickly, nor something that might give away my position (like coins being spilled all over the place when I'm behind cover).

Yes, my favorite being Tandy Leather. $0.43 worth of remainder veg-tand leather, really freaking heavy. $.05 worth of artificial sinew. A needle that cost about $0.10, and a three dollar awl. Yeah, good pocket holsters can be had cheap.

I plan on carrying my wallet (horizontally) and holster (vertically) in the same pocket. No matter who asks for cash, I reach for the same pocket. :evil:
 
Don't carry alkaline cells or 9v batteries in your pocket with loose change, or it will short and get real hot real fast.
 
I recommend against mashed potatoes. Seriously, I put nothing in a pocket with a firearm (except the holster). Not using a holster has its own risks, as pocket lint could get in the barrel and/or the works and cause all sorts of problems.
 
I recommend against utting even the pistol in your front pant pocket - bad place to carry with or without a pocket holster. Then again I have done it myself when there is no more of a pratical place to carry. In those instances i can say without a doubt that nothing but the loaded pistol and a pocket holster should be in the pocket. No extra magazines - they should be in the offside pocket or on the belt, never in the strong side pocket. As far as revolvers and speedloaders, the speedloader should never be in the same pocket (strong hand side) as the revolver even though it is best loaded with the strong hand. The reason for this is that if the speedloader drops the rounds, those rounds fit purdy darned good into the muzzle up to the shell case. Good way to blow up the barrel and you are not likely to realize a round is stuck in the muzzle backwards as you draw in the heat of the moment. I recommend keeping a speedloader where easily accessible by both hands, same as where to keep a magazine but not in contact with the weapon. Somewhere on the belt is usually best.
