What pocket holster for an aluminum snub?

I have a Taurus 85CH and had a Taurus 605 before that.

I bought an Unkle Mikes pocket holster for them. With the cheaper holster and heavy (for a snub) revolver the guns still printed in my pocket and really weighed down my pocket. I read that with a good holster these guns are pocketable (but I never bought a better pocket holster).

Anyway, I just bought (though don't get to pick it up until late this week thanks to MD's waiting period) a S&W 442. So I was wondering, with the lightweight aluminum snub (it weighs 15oz, 9 oz less than the 605 and 6oz less than the 85) do you need the more expensive holsters or will a cheap Unkle Mikes or similar work for the lighter revolver.

For now this is really just for my curiousity. I've ordered a Desantis Pocket Pal from Natchez Shooters Supply ( http://www.natchezss.com/brand.cfm?...dID=DI030TA02Z0&CFID=1561610&CFTOKEN=96980804 ). We'll see how it works, if it doesn't I may act on the suggestions here (though High Noon Holsters' Pocket Grabber will be high on my list- http://www.highnoonholsters.com/Product_Line/_Pocket_Grabber/_pocket_grabber.html )

I tried an Uncle Mike's for my 638 and it was OK for a while. Then it started to develop folds and creases in the areas where it usually flexes in my pocket. I didn't like what it turned into (an ugly shapeless bag), so I bought a Kramer horsehide pocket holster which I really like. I was lucky enough to find one lightly used on Ebay.

The Desantis Nemesis is a good holster, and cheap too. It holds its shape yet is not overly thick, and will somewhat form to you after a while.

K&D holsters & RJ Hedley also make good holsters, although RJ might not be taking orders right now.

Heck, I'm cheap. I used to carry a revolver in large pockets using a pouch I made plastic cut from a square plastic bottle. It worked great even if it didn't cost anything. I just duck taped it together. I'd slide it in the pocket and the plastic would distribute the weight of the gun across the bottom of the pocket as well as break up any outline. Looked like I had a large wallet in there if you noticed it at all.

I don't pocket carry my 85 UL, though, but IWB 'cause I'm almost always in jeans with jeans pockets anymore.

I've carried a Taurus M85 Ultralight for at least 5 years in a Galco Holster.

Desantis make a good leather pocket holster which works well ---Edited to not you ordered the pocket pal which is the leather holster I mention, a good choice---. The nemesis works great for my G-26 glock, But it does not work for my snubbie, I had it fall out of my pocket when I sat down a few years back when I tried the nemesis for a revolver (nylon lining is too slick).

I currently use a Kramer pocket holster which is very pricey like $72 shipped from Dillon (its more if you buy it direct from Kramer) .

I can highly recommend the leather desantis at about $40 but it still prints a little.

The Kramer hides the ouline of the gun and holds it perfectly in the correct position, I have been carrying my 642 in it daily for over 2 years. I highly recommend it.

another vote for Mika's holster

I've got one in my pocket right now wrapped around my M85. Very comfortable, sweat resistant and stays put when you draw your weapon. Top that with a price that can't be matched or beaten by other holster makers.

Got my holster. It was delivered yesterday evening when I was at work. It looks decent, but I haven't tried my Taurus 85CH in it yet (to test it out). I'm kind of worried that since the Taurus is a tad larger than the S&W .38spl frame that it might stretch it out too much (though in one holstering I very much doubt that would be a problem).

Unfortunately, while the waiting period is up, I just haven't had a chance to pick up my new S&W 442 yet. I'm working the 3-11:30 shift this evening at the hospital and it is snowing (actually, the snow stopped, it is ice coming down now) so I have to leave in about 5 minutes to get to work on time, so I won't be picking up my gun today. I haven't been able to pick it up in the morning because there have been work crews in the house every morning to remodel a bathroom and I don't know them- there needs to be someone home in case someone gets curious and starts checking out the other rooms in the house- I especially don't want someone with sticky fingers finding my guns. I'm off tomorrow so hopefully I can get there tomorrow after the contractors leave but before the sabbath begins.

Hopefully by Sunday I'll have the gun and also be able to test out how well the gun and holster combination work in my pocket.

"Gun fit" in a pocket holster seems pretty silly when you consider the point of the whole rig is to obscure any sort of profile!

Do you prefer the square or round cut Mika pocket holster?

It looks like they are both sewn the same way and you could cut off part of the "square" if you wanted to customize it.

"Gun fit" in a pocket holster seems pretty silly when you consider the point of the whole rig is to obscure any sort of profile!

Actually, the fit is very important, a loose fitting holster will not keep the gun in position leaving open the possibility that the gun might fall out of your pocket and onto the floor when you sit down or cross your legs. Poor fit wil also result in inconsistant position, and an uncovered trigger.

Also the possibility that extra crap, dirt and foreign objects could work their way into the holster damage the finish, and even tie up the gun if the crud works it way inside.

Chaim: Never did catch what kind of holster you bought. I have used an Uncle Mike's size 3 soft flexible holster for a variety of snubs: Taurus mods 85 and 605 (they are built on the same frame) Smith and Wesson mods 638 and 340SC. It seems to fit all of them fairly well....keeps the gun securely in place, covers the trigger completely and does a decent job of masking the familiar revolver profile. It is fairly snug getting one's hand into the holster to make a quick draw and takes some practice. Other than that I'm satisfied.

I 2nd the choice of the DeSantis Nemesis if you are looking for something that works well and that is inexpensive to use.

For a nicer holster, I use the Galco inside the front pocket horsehide holster.

I have been using a Kramer pocket holster for daily carry since the late 1990's for a succession of J-frames, including steel, Airweight, and Airlite. I have used it with the M640, M60, M342PD, and the M642. I really like this holster and I think it is a great value.

I also have a Sparks pocket holster that I sometimes use to let the Kramer pocket holster dry. It is a good holster, but it is larger than the Kramer, making it less suitable for use with some pockets.
