I carry my snub in a Galco leather pocket holster (#PHI58). I like the way the holster holds it in place and breaks up the outline of the gun. Believe it or not, I carried it last night for the first time without the holster. (I bought the gun used and the holster came with it.) It struck me instantly how much smaller and lighter it felt and how much size and weight the holster adds.

What are some makers/models any of you would recommend for something smaller, lighter, thinner than the Galco? By the way, skip the Nemesis as a suggestion. I tried one for my Kel-Tec and, although it seems like a quality made item, defeated the whole purpose for me. I felt like I had stuffed a dry sponge into my pocket.

My bro-in-law suggested making one for myself out of plastic cut from a milk or laundry detergent jug. Has anyone tried that? (This made me think of possible cutting a "liner" for an Uncles Mikes from this material. Past experience with that model was after a short time they get "crushed", start to take on the shape of the gun and are therefore less effective at breaking up the outline.)

Thanks, all.

Hume pocket j-frame holster.

Small, not bulky. Maybe not as good at breaking up the shape as I would like, but it stays in place and holds the weapon upright, in the same position, all the time.

A little bulkier than Uncle Mikes, but doesn't collapse and doesn't move when you draw.

R. Mika is a great guy to deal with.. He sent me the holster.. said "If you like it, send me a check, If you don't, give it to somebody who does"

I liked it and sent him a check.. No way I wouldn't send a check to somebody like that!

I agree with cookekgjr. Light-weight, stays in pocket when gun is drawn, mutes profile of revolver (at least on my 642), keeps its shape and is cheap. What more do you need?

mikas for a 642

Just got my Mikas for my 642 last week. It is perfect. Stays put in your pocket and catches it when you put it back.

I like the Safariland 25 pocket holster

http://www.safariland.com/products.asp?id=27

I saw it recommended in an article by Massad Ayoob. It's very thin and lightweight, but remains open to allow easy reholstering. And the surface has a suede-like texture so that it remains in the pocket during the draw.

I found one online for about $27 or so. You do have to specify right-handed vs. left-handed.

I can relate. I bought a Nemesis for my 605 and it looks like I stuffed a pair of socks in my pocket. Not good.

Has anybody tried one of the kydex pocket holsters from grandfatheroak.com?

I second the suggestion of PSH. I too have a Safariland pocket holster and have been very satisfied with its performance. Suede-like surface on the outside and some sort of slick plastic on the inside. The gun comes out and the holster stays in the pocket. Every time. Give it some consideration.

Another Robert Mikas vote

I called Robert today and told him what I needed in a pocket holster. He said he'd make it tomorrow and get it to me by the first of the week.

When I tried to give him my credit card number he refused, said he work's on the honor system there. If you like it, send me a check. He also said if I didn't like it, skip the check and pass the holster on to somone who would use it.

I don't think in this day and age you can say more about a business man. I only hope people are as honest as he is.

Wild Bill's

I've been pocket carrying my J-frame S&W's in this Wild Bill's Pocket Holster for several years. It's my favorite. If memory is correct, I think its made from horse hide.

FIST makes a very thin Kydex pocket holster. I also like the fact that it does not absorb moisture.

Just 86 the holster altogether. Weekly, clean the pocket lint out, and you're good-to-go.

I tried, but my 642 just moves around too much for comfort sans holster. A couple of Mikas en route:)

When you carry something as heavy as a Taurus 605 in a front pocket without a holster, it flops around too much to be comfortable or properly concealed...in my pockets anyway.

Jim PHL, let me know if you decide to sell that Galco holster. I've been looking for a decent leather pocket holster.

I'll second that, I got one for $15, extremely satisfied. After I got it, carrying became the rule instead of the exception.
