what protects against foam?

Ever notice that new S&Ws come wrapped in a (I don't know if is waxed, but looks like butcher paper) paper that is a barrier between the pistol and the foam.

I think it used to be just wax paper. Now, it’s vapor barrier paper. Either way, point made. It at least a neutral barrier between the gun an, whatever it’s resting against.

Uline sells it by the roll. I got it when i did my move. I still have some knives wrapped in it 5 yrs. later all fine.

What about these gun rugs?

I store many firearms in gun rugs like the one Barmcd shows. The cloth/felt barrier gets a spritz of silicone oil from time to time, and the firearms get wiped down with a silicone oiled rag when I'm done handling them. I do check on all of them at least annually. I live in a high heat/humidity environment in SE TX, and no corrosion issues at all over 40+ years.

That reminds me, I need to go have a look at that Ithaca M37...it's been awhile. 🫤

I just store my guns in cheap silicone "gun sock" I get off Ebay. They look just like regular socks. As a matter of fact, I have used just plain old white socks until I got all fancy and bought "gun socks." All those foam lined cases are good for (IMHO) is taking up space on the shelf...no I do not throw them away. I save every one of them.

I also do not oil the exterior of my guns. I wax them with Renaissance Wax.

I've seen too much foam break down over time. Not necessarily short time, but ver several years. Contanimation for petroleum based products, oxidation from the atmosphere, and who knows what else ay be the culprit.

So, I do not store my firearms in foam containers.

I will use foam containers for short term use as in transporting a firearm to some place.

I've been using silicone based gun socks, mostly to protect the guns from handling damage in the gun safe, but they, so far, have not had any other ill effects.

Need to check my ancient Ruger Super Bearcat; it's been in a rug in the safe for maybe 30 years. Gun rugs, in a safe with a heating rod. Our climate isn't super damp; the safe is in my concrete walled shop, but it is above grade.

ETA-rugs let you fit more guns in less space, and they're not clanking against each other when being removed.

I have several nicely blued guns with some that I have had for decades. Having had a bad experience with a rifle stored in foam I quit doing that years ago. I do transport guns in foam cases. I store guns now just like I was taught decades ago. Wipe them down with a good gun oil and a soft cotton cloth after each handling. Store them so that the metal isn't touching anything. We didn't have gun socks or Renaissance Wax back then because we really didn't need them.

My pistols sit inside silicone impregnated socks inside my safe. The all metal ones are inside Zerust bags.

All of my rifles are in Zerust bags with Zerust wicks down the barrels. It is extremely cheap insurance, so cheap, I don't understand why everyone doesn't do this with their stuff.

Soon I'll have my gun vault room completed which will be 100% humidity controlled and they're be on display on the wall.

Just use freezer bags to store handguns in before putting them in a foam lined rug and the problem is solved.
