It's official. I haven't killed anything in the past year as of about August 1st. I must be getting old. Although the thread title also asks what rifles-cartridges have you hunted with. Could have had 2 deer. One big doe in a shotgun zone with a scoped, fully rifled, 12 ga. 870, ( does that count as long as it's fully rifled ? ) At just over 100 yds. from my ladder stand in my friends woods. Except it was in his neighbors field. The neighbor hunts and I didn't think he'd appreciate me shooting a deer on his property then dragging it back into my friends woods.. I zero that 870 at 100 yds. Had a doe permit for that area. Here's the view from the stand with the deer location circled.
Had the safety off, a solid rest, crosshairs centered and then decided not to cause trouble with the neighbors. The other deer was in a rifle zone where I use the 30-30. Had a deer come up out of a small gully less than 75 yds. in front of my blind. Had the Leupold 1-4x up to 4 power. Didn't see horns but I had a doe permit for that area also. Put crosshairs on it and realized it was a fawn. They lose their spots by winter, but it was still antlerless which is legal on my permit. Could have legally taken it but I didn't have the heart to shoot "Bambi" . Here's the blind. -
I'm not that desperate and wouldn't have gotten that much meat out of it anyway. Could also have been a button buck but he or she should be all grown up this year so maybe we can see each other again this coming November. To top it all off I also lost access to 80 or 90 acres of woodchuck habitat when the owner passed away and the place is still for sale and my access is still in limbo. Right now I'm just hoping for a good, upcoming squirrel season. Only got out a couple times last fall and got nothing. But at least I still enjoy hunting even when I get nothing. I basically just love the outdoors.
