I've narrowed it down to Springfield Armory XD-40 subcompact or a Glock 26(9mm), 27(.40), 29 (10mm), or 30 (.45). I can only get 1. What do you guys recommend?

well... IMO, i dunno if I would go 3 in 1 for a CCW gun.

Get good with one caliber and stick with it. Shoot and practice with it a lot.

My choice would be either the Glock 26 or G 27. Add an finger extention onto it.

Y no subcompact 9mm?

I carry a G-26 in a comptac C-tac. Don't let anyone tell you that there is a disadvantage to 9mm. Use a quality round like Speer gold dot's or winchester rangers and you'll have plenty of stopping power.

My preferred mode of carry is a flush fit 10 rd magazine in the gun and a full-size glock 17 magazine as a spare. The way i figure it, if i get through the first 11 rounds without the threat being sufficiently neutralized, i'm gonna want a whole lot more where hat came from. 10+1 in the gun and 2 glock 17 mags makes for 45 rounds of ammo, a sizable carry load.

And before you ask, yes, i live in a BAD neighborhood.

The rest are to big and bulky

I have and love to take along my Kel-Tec P3AT. It fits in the pocket of almost anything you wear. It is a .380 so can stop an attack and it is almost invisable to the average citizen. I wear mine in the cloth case that it came in and no one notices, they think it is a "blackberry computer" next to the cell phone. All the other guns that I have are 9mm and bigger and show (I think they print), and that is not what you want.

the information age is the best thing to happen to concealed carry. When I got my c-tac holster in i was showing it to my dad. i put in on, put in my G26 and put a regular T shirt over it. I walked into the living room where my dad was. "It looks like a tumor," he says "i can see it across the room" He walks over and pats my cell phone on my hip. I lift my t-shirt revealing my cell phone. "Oh, nevermind then, go put the holster on". I lifted my t-shirt further and turned my strongside to him. "Oh"

The right holster and right belt make all the difference.

I hvae been looking at the Taurus PT145 for a little while myself. I liked it for the capacity, but I just can't convince myself to buy it with out atleast shoting one first. I love my PT92 but its noit their design so I had a little more confidence in buying before shooting. Something else I have been looking at was a Para Ordanance Warthog. Its pretty compact (a little wide) and packa great punch, but it is significantly more expensive than the Taurus.

G29

 What CAN'T be done with the G29 ten millimeter??

I choose to carry mine on a daily basis. In a Milt Sparks VM2 or Executive Companion holster, she'll disappear on your hip!

As a person who has carried a sidearm for over 40 years, I can only share what I have learned and what works for me, FWIW.
All the guns on your wish list are fantastic firearms BUT you will find that they will become heavy after a few hours, you will probably have to dress around your carry piece which could mean new clothes. All the guns on your list WILL become uncomfortable if carried IWB for long periods of time, which is why most gun carrying professionals carry OWB on their belt. Regardless of who tells you differently, IWB CCW will be annoying until you acclimate yourself to that method of carry. You will have people telling you that they can CCW a full size 1911 while wearing a thong Speedo on South Beach. It has been written that a CCW may not always be comfortable but they are always comforting. Just about everyone who decides to carry a concealed weapon tends to "overarm" themselves thinking they need a cannon with three or four extra magazines. The truth is you don't need all that unless your headed to Iraq for "contractor" duty, then you can't get enough. In over forty years of carrying a handgun, I can count on one hand the number of times I had to "break leather" and have never fired any of my CCWs in anger. 99.9% of people who CCW will never need to use their piece.
You left off one of the better CCWs around, that being a Kahr, the PM9 is very light and very thin, you will find it very comfortable for all day carry. It carries 7 rounds of 9MM which is plenty. Remember the rule of threes: "Most gunfights are fought at a distance of three feet, with three shots fired and are over in three seconds. Having said that, you need a very reliable (no Kel-Tecs please), very easy to get at, very controllable piece that can be brought to bare quickly and brought back to point of aim quickly after firing. 9MM does all these things.
Holsters: over the years I have spent hundreds of dollars on holsters, leather, kydex and nylon. I have a box full of misc holsters that aren't used.
Today I carry my Kahr MK9 in an Uncle Mike's #36 holster, this is a nylon IWB holster that costs $11.00 and of all my holsters, it is the most comfortable for me. I wear it outside my waistband but behind the belt. It disappears under a "T" shirt and is extremely comfortable.
Good luck in your search, don't leave Kahr Arms out, they come in 9MM and 40S&W and are great CCWs.

Gunmeister, you make some good points. I currently carry a full size USP .45 so I am actually looking to size down a notch or two. Right now I am leaning towards the XD but I will defintely shoot a Taurus Millenium Pro and (based on your suggestion) a couple of Kahrs.

PS I agree with you about holsters. I am using a $15 Uncle Mikes sidekick IWB and love it.

Here is your answer --

Drum Roll! Wait for it ---

Get the largest, most powerfull handgun that YOU can shoot proficiently and that YOU can carry comfortably.

I can no more tell you what model fits those criteria on an Internet board than I can tell you what color tie goes well with your eyes. ;)

Any of those that you have listed are quality firearms that will probably defend you well, IF you can shoot well with it, and if YOU HAVE IT WITH YOU!

So far in this poll, "Other" is leading by a wide margin, so let me suggest an appropriate "Other".

S&W "Airweight" 642 .38Spl +P. With arguably a few exceptions, the perfect all around daily carry handgun for personal protection.

"Daily Carry" is of course a loaded question. Depending largly on typical dress & social situations. If it must be deep concealed - the light & small frame revolvers are about the maximum for pocket carry. There are some smaller & lighter handguns out there - but none will give the best balance of reliability, power, ease of use under stress, controallability & accuracy as will a small & light snub .38 revolver.

If you typically wear a cover garmet (tee shirt, sport coat, sweater, coat, etc.), your options expand. If this is possible, the Glock 19, S&W 3913 & Sig 239 9MM's seem good choices for me. You could go with a Glock 26 with a mag finger extension - but you then loose a few rounds of capacity and end up with about the same size package as the Glock 19. Bigger still??? 1911 .45's & medium frame .357 revolvers.

My recommendation for personal defence, concealed carry, would be to limit choices in calibers to 9MM & .38Spl. Other larger or high performance calibers are fine - but require a considerable amount of practice to get good at shooting under stress with - especially with smaller than "service" sized handguns.

Actually, I've never found one piece that covered all of my carry needs. I bet that will be your experience as well. I would reccomend a small, flat pocket automatic in 32ACP or larger for your "go everywhere gun". Second, a good midsize auto like a Glock 19 or 36, or a 2"-3" barreled revolver for wear under light cover. Third, a larger pistol or revolver of major caliber for serious social events that can be dressed around.
Now you're covered for just about any situtation! Isn't this fun!!!!?

Of the models on the list I vote for and often carry a GLOCK 26. The G26 will ride in a pocket holster on occasion or IWB strong side. Ocassionaly it will sit in a yaqui slide for a match or under a jacket. I mix and match on occasion.

Not on the list and a pistol I almost always have with me is a S&W Model 38 Bodyguard. Mine was made in about 1959 and it is a constant companion in my pocket. A go anywhere piece. My off duty time generally is not very risky and the revolver in the pocket is all I feel I need.

I have recently been packing a Beretta 92D Centurion under a Royal Robbins 5.11 vest. It is a duplicate of my duty gun and I train a lot with the duty gun. A comonality of training and liability issue. Still and all the model 38 is the one I will have with me more often than not.

If I were limited to one pistol however the G26 would definatly get the nod. It will do anything well and has lots of quality bolt on options.

Darkmind,
Afraid not partner. The 23 can be made to shoot the 9mm with a barrel and extractor change. Don't know how well that works, as the 40 cal breach face is larger than the 9mm case head. You can however, get a 357 SIG barrel for the 23 and go that route. I don't think anyone makes a 10mm barrel for the 23.

I didn't vote - you're all good no matter what you choose. Glocks are Glocks (reliable) and the XD is pretty darn close to being synonymous.

My primary carry gun is a Glock M-27 with Trijicon NS.Great little gun.I've never cared for a 9mm for protection. The little 40 S&W is a much better choice in my opinion.

Ruger Redhawk

Not meaning to be smart or anything, but the best advise I can give you is to "get what you will carry". I've got 12 or so pistols, but I only carry two.
A Colt Defender and a S&W 638. Get what you WILL carry.
