What size cleaning rod do you prefer?

I'm getting ready to order a set of Tipton carbon fiber cleaning rods for the rifles and need to get a .22 and a .30.

The .22 rifle is a CZ452 with a long barrel so I'm pretty sure that the 40" is the way to go there.....any thoughts?

The .30 caliber will be mostly used on my military style rifles, but occasionally on the Savage 110. The military rifles are Garand, FAL, and SKS.

I know that the 36" will do the job, but does anyone prefer the 40"?

Paul - I have accumulated a few rods over the years and do feel it essential to have one that is extra long ... much as anything to clean my Turk!!

I had and have managed to obtain more (from UK) Parker Hale rods - plus some new jags, brushes etc - having found these the best, tho Dewey stuff also good ( for rods) except for me the copper/bronze brushes are way too feeble - not stiff enough bristles.

So - I would favor the longer length - providing you do also have a shorter one for the short barrels - simply cos the long one can whip too much as so much is not inserted all way. If that makes sense! :p

Thanks Chris,

I tend to agree about better for it to be too long......it's not like I have to worry about my short arms being able to reach :p

I'll probably go ahead and get the Tiptons along with a set of jags and brushes. It's time to graduate from my Wal-Mart cleaning tools and get some good ones.

This is the first stage of my "not buying more guns until I take time to get what I need for the guns I already have" philosophy :D

I forgot to mention earlier - the cheapie Outers multi section aluminum rod dealies are --- what is a polite word .... junk!!

Ah but Paul - have you ever stopped to think (meaning total up) just how much we can and do spend on ''accessories'' .... :uhoh: :p

Sorta reminds me of those folks (what me?!) who have bought ammo or loading gear - to be followed by the gun they suit! Oh and also - I once picked up a leupold which had no rifle as ''home'' - sorted that out tho since getting the Ruger #1   ;)

I've got a 36" Dewey that I use for my AR and my Savage .223 bolt gun and a 40" (I think) .30 caliber one for my 700. My 700 has a 26" barrel on it, the Savage is 24" I think. I've been considering getting one of those Otis pull through type cleaning kits though, just to see how well they work.

I use the Otis pull-through cleaning system for rifle and pistol cleaning (including 22 rimfire). It's the deluxe rifle/pistol kit (pictured below) and I've been quite happy with it especially being able to carry it on a belt or in a range bag. This is also good for rifles where you can't push a rod from the breech end and don't want to work it from the muzzle (M1 Garand/M1A/M14, etc.). Military snipers use a similar kit except everything is non-reflective black instead of bare brass. The pull-through cable is coated with a thick plastic (protects the bore) and is very strong. I've learned to fold patches so they fit very tight in the bore. Tight patches clean fast! I haven't used a cleaning "rod" in the last 8 years and don't miss them one bit. It was the best $40 I've spent on cleaning gear.

I'm still using a segmented aluminum rod. I'd like to replace it but I don't have a clue what to get. One for pistol, one for rifle is what I'd like (and would I need a third for shotgun?)

Any recommendations? I've got .22 up to .357Mag in rifle, .22 up to .45ACP in pistol.

LB - I have always had a dedicated rifle rod for 22 - same for pistol - they are old Brit ones. Hard to comment on those but - for sure it is IMO worth investing in a good Dewey - they are well made, nice free spinning handle and well coated.

If you see many years ahead of shooting (and cleaning) a bigger investment now will pay off.

No kidding! That's sort of the whole point right now. I need some buttpads for the STG, SKS, 870.....want to put a recoil reducer in the Savage 110...extra parts for all of the Mil-Surp rifles.....re-stock the ammo coffers.

On top of that, wifey is hinting that she wants one of those high dollar air pistols....I know Marini and Steyr are two of the makers.....oh, did I mention that they cost almost as much as a USP Mk23 SOCOM? :what:

Oh heck - there goes your next ''real'' gun!!

No kidding....but she really enjoys it and she's good at it too! Not to mention being good with her 1911.....but she can't use that at work while she can the air pistol.

Besides, if she hets "her" new gun, then that means I'm entitled to one, right

I use a Sinclair bore guide. The bore guide makes it necessary to use an extra long cleaning rod.
I have both stainless and carbon rods. Both are fine. I consider a good handle with bearings most important when considering a cleaning rod

hairtrigger,

I'll check out that bore guide as well....i assume that's one of those long ones that sticks about 6 inches from the bore? Presumably to provide a straighter shot down the bore with the rod?

I've only ever used the little brass ones, but they really don't seem to do much on the long guns.
