It seems like every company makes a dog semi-auto at some point. Here are the ones I can think of off the top of my head:

S&W, SIGMA, no debate about that one.

Glock 36, this is considered the worst of the Glocks by many. I agree.

Kel-Tec, P-40, out of a line of bad handguns, the P-40 stand out. It was so bad that they quite making it. Considering what other POS they will still make, it must have been bad.

Kahr, PM-40, this is considered the worst one by Kahr fans. I think all plastic Kahrs are dogs but that is just me.

What about Colt, Browning, Ruger, Taurus, Walther, H&K, SIG, CZ and others? There was a Taurus that got a lot of bad press but I can't remember the name.

MaterDei, what possible criteria to define "dog" could you possibly be using other than personal feelings? To say "Ruger- anything not a .22", let alone ALL Glocks is totally ridiculous. A lot of people don't like Glocks, and that is fine, but no way you can consider them "dogs" in the autopistol world. And Rugers "P" series for one example are a great line of reliable, low priced pistols.

Oh, wait. I just re read your post and realized you aren't knocking all Glocks, only their polymer models. Sorry.

I don't think Ruger makes a dog. All their autos are solid guns, they may not be as refined as some but they all tend to do what they are designed to do pretty well. Glocks seem to be pretty good but the G-36 is the closest thing to a problem child they have made. It is still much better than many other guns that aren't even considered dogs. I would still take a G-36 over anything made by Kel-Tec, any Taurus (except the Beretta clone), or any South African gun to name just a few. "Dog" can be a relative term, it doesn't have to mean a true POS in this sense.

Ruger - anything not a .22
Glock - All their polymer models

Whatever - Have you shot any of Rugers guns? Their revolvers are excellent! All Glocks - yeah - one of the best selling guns of all times - yep all dogs! Whatever

You could do a LOT worse than a Glock 36, believe me. Mine has had no more hiccups than any other Glock I own, and certainly holds its own, reliability-wise, with the two 1911s I have (Kimber, Sistema). Seven rounds of .45acp in a thin, light pistol? Yeah, I'd like the G36 better if it could use the mags from the G21 and G30 but then it wouldn't be the slim-line, single-stack Glock that so many seem to clamor for. Is it my favorite Glock? No. But it's way better than mediocre and it's still a keeper.

like to hear more about the PM40

as I'm considering one, or maybe a PM9. I have read very little bad about either. What do you know that I don't?

S&W - Sigma

Kahr - PM9

Colt - All American 2000 & Double Eagle

SIG - Mosquito

Walther - PPK (overhyped by J. Bond movies), also the P22

Charles Daly - 1911s

Llama - 1911s

Hi Point - whole line

HK's dog is the VP70Z. It looks like a gun Hi Point designed. The only saving grace is that it was the first polymer pistol ever manufactured. Other than that it sucks.

BM's list I agree with pretty much 100% but the S&W sport series 22a 22lr pistols could probably give the Sigmas a run for their money in this contest!

"like to hear more about the PM40 as I'm considering one, or maybe a PM9. I have read very little bad about either. What do you know that I don't?"

Check out the Kahr club over on Glocktalk. They seem to think the PM-40 is the worst of the Kahrs yet made. I am big Kahr fan but I don't like the plastic pistols they make. The all steel Kahrs are some of the best handguns ever made. I love my two K-9s.

I did have a Kahr P-9 that is supposed to be the best of the plastic Kahrs by most accounts. I bought it because it has a better track record than the ultra small PM-9. I had problems with it that I don't could have been fixed even if I had sent it back to the factory. The frame is very flimsy and weak. The frame on mine flexed and led to the trigger not resetting. It happend with the extra capacity 8rd mags mostly. It also didn't have the fit or finish I have come to expect from Kahr. The feed ramp was uneven and rough. I always polish my feedramps and chambers on Kahrs because they are tight and that will help reduce jams. The P-9 still looked rough after a polish and I have less and less tolerance for this BS as I get older. I am not going to waste my time and money trying to fix a gun that should have been perfect from the factory. I did that with a Kel-Tec and a Taurus and I find it makes my life much easier to just buy good handguns and sell the junk. I won't even buy from certain gun companies anymore because it is not worth the risk when there are plenty of quality guns being made and on the used market. One side note, don't judge all Kahrs by the plastic guns, the steel Kahrs are much better.

Colt Double Eagle = Worst handgun I've ever had the displeasure of owning.

Yeah, but have you seen the prices on these things lately? :what:

I saw a DE 10mm for over $1200 last gunshow - and somebody was right in the middle of buying it. :what:

I regularly see DE running in the $600 and up range.

^^ I certainly have noticed the prices and frankly, I don't get it. Not only was the DE the worst auto pistol I ever owned, it was also one of the worst customer service experience I ever had. It's a long story but Colt worked on the gun 3 times and it still wouldn't get through a mag without a malfunction.
After 3 times, Colt told me it must be MY fault. :fire:

Funny I have 2 double eagles a Blue officers model and a full size one in 10mm, other than being fugly they have been great shooter's. worst gun for me I would say anything made by Hi-point and Llama.....Also my ex Kimber eclipse thing was a pos and wouldn't feed any ammo I tried to run through it...

I don't feel too bad if somone lists one of my guns on the list, I even own one of the guns bashed in the list I agreed with(a 380acp on the 1911 platform by Llama, mine is good though.)

And even if on the list, does not mean gun is not desireable,in my area, any halfway decent gun with the pony sells at a good price quickly.

I know the PPK is not the best gun in the world or the most practical but I still want one for fun and nostalgias sake.

Most major manufacturors have put out a mutt from time to time.

SIG-P245
Beretta-P9000--Cougar
Raven---ALL

Funny thing is---I owned one of each over the years. :banghead:

I pretty much will only buy Ruger and S&W anymore--not the latest--greatest--highest dollar or the mostest---but guarantee you don't want any of them pointed at you-----they will all ventilate a target with business-like function and accuracy.

I find Ravens work well for "ring of fire" guns. Would reccomend them for anyone on an extremely tight budget over a 22 Jennings or such.

Sig Sauer 245 sucks? How come? I thought they looked neat but I have never shot one. Cougar sucks? Rotary barel opration is unusual but I have heard good things about these guns and the limited amount of rounds I fired it seemed ok.

Gunsmith guy I met said the 45acp one was great.

Add Beretta 92s to that list and I agree 100%. Those three are the most reliable guns that I know of. I put them just over the Glocks, SIGs and CZs, all of which I have seen jam. Never seen a S&W or a Ruger or a Beretta jam.

Rugerfreak, what kind of problems did you have with yours? Mine's been 100% reliable with even questionable ammo since I got it. I found it accurate enough that it's replaced my old P220. The only problems I've heard have been issues some have with the factory magazine followers, but nothing that would result in it being a "dog."

+1 on Kahrs. I had a horrible experience, both with the pistol (an MK9), and with the company's customer service. On the first one, the slide cracked at 300 rounds. Sent it back, waited almost three months before they decided it was toast. The replacement had a very loose barrel lockup, was not nearly as accurate as the first, and had some real problems feeding 124gr Gold Dots.

I am not sure about being called a dog but I don't like the Sig Pro that much after trying one. As for Rugers their center fire autos work well enough but they look ugly as sin to me. But thats a prefrence issue. The P95 is a good value for the money. Their 22's are the best however.

For Glock I never tried the 36 but I have heard of problems. Most Glocks run very well so its unusually to hear of troubles like you do with the 36. Some brands turn out more crap than others. The majority of Taurus guns I have tried sucked.
