I use a dedicated priming tool. It also does a few other functions. It's called a Dillon 650.

Yeah I have one of those XL650 priming tools also, lol...pretty fancy priming tool I must say.

To have a progressive press and yet prime off-press would be very counter-productive for my purposes but I know some do it that way.

I never understood why people would do that.

For pistol brass I knock the dirt and sand off, run it through the vibratory cleaner, lube it, load it, shoot it, repeat. I don't need to boost my ego by seeing my reflection in my brass.

I still use my original Lee hand primer with the screw in shell holders. I've been able to find the old shell holders I've needed at gun shows. I have a half dozen or so. hdbiker

Should have been an "either or both" part of your pole; I use either; primer attachment when on Lee turret or single stage, if I'm doing extensive case prep off the press (like for most rifle), I was using a Lee hand primer but recently purchased the benchtop Lee primer.

I have an older LEE (with the round tray) that I have set up for small pistol primers, and a newer one with the square tray for large pistol/rifle priming. (The large primer tray for the old one cracked so I bought the newer one for those.)

It's slower than using the priming set ups on my pro-1000's, but it's been working for me for quite a while so I'll stick with them until I upgrade my progressive press.

Stay safe.

Priming off the press affords an opportunity to inspect the case aagin for problems before reloading it again. I hate rework and would rather toss a case before stuffing powder and a bullet in it than after.

Also, the loading process goes more smoothly when you do not resize at the same time as loading.

The choice is up to the loader as to whether separate resizing from reloading or not.

If i was always using new production cases, I'd load from "soup to nuts", but since I use fired cases for my source of cases, I'd rather have the opportunity to inspect cases for problems and discard bad cases before I have to re-work them.

Do what ever rings your bell.

Handgun rounds on a 550. Rifle rounds are primed on an old RCBS priming tool. This tool predates the current bench mounted priming tool. I also have an RCBS Universal Automatic priming tool that not used very often. These Green gadgets rule!

I started this post in June 2019 to find out the method other folks used to prime their cases. Thanks to all who voted and responded. My conclusion is that a good majority of folks use a stand-alone priming tool versus priming on their reloading press. Based on this, I purchased an RCBS bench priming tool and have now used it for priming several hundred rounds. I really, really like this tool and much prefer it to the reloading press priming method I heretofore used. It is easier to use, and I have much better feel of the priming process and get a more consistent priming job. I mounted the RCBS priming tool right next to my press, and it is easy to use both tools without one interfering with the other. I've attached a picture of my set-up. Again, thanks for all the input.

There’s not an option for “both”. Pistol gets ran on the LCT and primed on press. Rifle gets ran on the Lee Classic Cast and I prime off press with the old Lee hand prime (round tray) and I like it well enough that I have 4 of them that I have acquired over time for basically nothing and I keep them in case I break/wear out the linkage.

Thanks for coming back and letting us know what you decided on and how it is working for you.

With that closure, I'll close this thread
